After completing a ton of much needed maintenance on my rig I now have a P0115 code. I have replaced the ECT sensor and pigtail connector because I noticed that there was bare copper wire showing on the two wires leading into the connector. I have also made sure my coolant is topped off and the reservoir is at the full mark. Reading the printout from the code software, it mentioned checking the ECM. I'm wondering if the two exposed wires might have shorted. I used an infrared laser tester all over the cooling system and everything reads around 190º. The rig seems to be running fine. Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step because I'm getting frustrated?

With OEM parts? I’d try clearing the code and see if it comes back. With a new sensor, it should be fine, unless the new sensor was faulty (not unheard of) or you have a wiring gremlin further up the line.

Would a stuck thermostat contribute to P0115? I replaced coolant temp sensor, had the battery disconnected, but still throws this code on startup. When cold the engine starts rough, etc. Admittedly I did not use Toyota Sensor. I am hoping it’s not a gremlin I’m the wiring harness.

No, the thermostat would not contribute to P0115. If it was instead P0125, then tstat could be the culprit.

I’d try a new Toyota ECT sensor and clear the code definitively with a reader. If it comes back, you’ve got a wiring issue.

I have a cheap HF Centech reader, tried to use it to clear the code and it didn’t work. I may order a Toyota ect and see if that works.

Turned out to be both the sensor and harness. The housing on the old sensor sort of fell apart. My guess is after so many heat cycles the sensor and connector get brittle and fail. For anyone that has this issue of P0115 I’d replace both at the same time.

I no longer regret preventatively replacing both when I did TB/WP/VC gaskets/starter job...even though the originals still worked and I had no codes. 💸

Can you provide us the part numbers please
