2006 Cruiser 187000 miles. Had timing chain done about 3000 miles ago. Now throwing these codes. Seems to be running fine. Any thoughts?

There are wires that get eaten up by the serpentine belt if they aren't clipped back in properly after a timing belt change. You can search mud for the exact location of the wires i'm talking about.

Disclaimer: I've never worked on the VVTi version of the 2uz-fe. With that said, those codes typically correspond to 1) malfunctioned sensor (multiple potential causes), or 2) skipped teeth on the timing belt (improper install).

Guys, Code came back again. Dealership says its Oil Control Valve on left bank. Wants $500 to replace. Questions

1) Is $500 a good price
2) If I drive it without repair what is the chance of engine damage
3) How easy is it to do this job myself

All replies and advice appreciated

To replace the OCV, the valve cover (head cover) has to be removed. Pretty sure the OCV is held on by just one bolt and sits on top of the cam, so easy to replace once the valve cover is off (see attached PDFs). Nevertheless, I strongly question whether the OCV is truly the issue here. I still think your timing is off on that cam (skipped teeth when installing timing belt); hence the P0021 code (over-advanced timing on bank #2). This makes the most sense considering your timing belt was changed just 3k miles ago.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. John at San Diego Trux seems to agree with you that its not the OCV valve

look at this one to see pics of the valve. At least check the connectors on both sides. I had a different code. p0020
3k miles is perfect timing to fray the crank /cam sensor wires after a belt change.

the valves are about 50 USD

Your problem was unrelated to @Cantatan problem. P0020 directly indicates OCV malfunction. In contrast, P0021 indicates a mechanical problem, specifically the bank 2 cam has over-advanced timing. P0021 Code w/ Check Engine Light Cantatan also has P0018, which indicates the cam timing on bank 2 is not in the same timing as the crankshaft.

@Cantatan I think you need to pull the upper timing covers and check the timing of both cams relative to the crank. Bank 2 may be off by a couple of teeth on the belt.

Ya I realized that. Just showing where the valve was. That it isn't under the cover. I also said I had a different code. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts though.

Anytime.

Sarcasm aside, thanks for correcting my misstatement about the OCV location.

Anyone have a write up on how to pull the upper timing covers and check the timing? If the timing is off Can I adjust it without having to do a complete timing belt re-install?
Thanks for all the help

You can pull the PS cover by removing a few bolts and nut off the cover. The DS cover is similar but you also have to remove the camshaft position sensor. Then turn the crank pulley clockwise 1-2 full revolutions until the mark on the crank pulley is lined up with “0” on the timing cover at the crank. Then check that the camshaft pulleys are lined up with the marks on the backing plates. You cannot adjust timing without pulling the timing belt tensioner and timing belt off.

Awesome thanks. Possibly a dumb question but how do i turn the crank pulley?
22mm socket and 1/2” ratchet or breaker bar on the pulley bolt. ONLY TURN CLOCKWISE. Also, read the timing belt section of the FSM - it addresses most of your uncertainties.
