Ok, for a little while now, my truck has been leaking fluid from the radiator, but it hasn't been overheating, so I figured I would need to be getting a new radiator soon, but didn't worry about it too much.

Recently though, the guage has started saying that it is overheating, so I went ahead and replaced the thermostat hoping I would be able to buy myself a little bit more time. Only that didn't work.

I'm a little bit confused about a couple things. One is with the readings I'm getting from the guage. Within say, thirty seconds, of starting it up in the morning, the temperature guage is already all the way past overheating. This seems a little bit fast to me. Could it be that I've got pockets of air in the cooling system from the radiator leak, which are around the sensor and giving it unusually high readings? But then after the guage spiked right away, I stopped at a light, and the guage dropped down to nothing.

The second things is that the heating system is kind of intermittent. Yesterday the air from the heater would start to get cool while I was sitting at stoplights, and at the same time, the guage would drop down as well.

I figure there are four things to check and or replace. The thermostat, the temp sender, the radiator and the water pump. The thermostat has been replaced, the sender was replaced a few months ago but it acting strangely, the radiator needs to be fixed or replaced, and I don't know much about the condition of the water pump, but I felt both of the hoses on the radiator and they were both warm, so I'm guessing that fluid is moving through it.

I'm thinking the next thing I need to do is replace or fix the radiator, and burp it, and see where I am then. Does this sound about right to you guys? Or am I completely off base here?

Now how difficult is it to pull the radiator? I only have a Haynes book, and it doesn't have any pictures or diagrams for a 60. Or would I be better off just having a shop do it? Should I try to have the radiator repaired, or just get a new one?

Thanks in advance guys.

Replacing the radiator is easy. Air pockets in the cooling system can cause false high temp readings, but usually, eventually the readings return to normal. Pegging the gauge after thirty seconds is not something I have experienced. Check sender AND gauge along with the other things.

Well Bean you mentioned something that tipped me off. You said it was leaking but you never mentioned filling it back up. Believe it or not if you are leaking it doesn't take long at all for that gauge to rise to the top. Had a buddy who had the same problem and all we did was fill it up with water and he hasn't had any problems since. and we added a lot of water. even though you have fluid flowing thru there you also have air in there and it doesn't take any time at all for air to heat up. so fill you radiator up till you top it off, then start your truck up, let it run for about 5-10 min and you should see the level drop down. add more water or anitfreeze till you top it off again. you will be good to go after that.

Taking your radiator out is easy as pie . You do have to take the heating coil out which is kind of a pain in the arse, but can be done. Had mine out in about 30 minutes. Took it to a guy and he boiled and soldered it and cost me about 25 bucks.

Good luck, Chuck

I should have mentioned that I did fill it back up. The first time that worked, the second time, not so much.

I'm starting to think it may be a couple different things that happen to be occurring at the same time. I went out at lunch and turned it on, not starting it up, just turning it on, and the temp guage went right up to the top. It had been sitting in the sun for a few hours, but I've never seen the sun make the engine that warm, especially in November. So I'm thinking I might need to fix the radiator and replace the temp sensor. The fuel guage is working normally, so I'm guessing it's not the ground.

So my new course of action is to fix or replace the radiator and also replace the temp sensor since I have an extra one.
