Ok, for a little while now, my truck has been leaking fluid from the radiator, but it hasn't been overheating, so I figured I would need to be getting a new radiator soon, but didn't worry about it too much.
Recently though, the guage has started saying that it is overheating, so I went ahead and replaced the thermostat hoping I would be able to buy myself a little bit more time. Only that didn't work.
I'm a little bit confused about a couple things. One is with the readings I'm getting from the guage. Within say, thirty seconds, of starting it up in the morning, the temperature guage is already all the way past overheating. This seems a little bit fast to me. Could it be that I've got pockets of air in the cooling system from the radiator leak, which are around the sensor and giving it unusually high readings? But then after the guage spiked right away, I stopped at a light, and the guage dropped down to nothing.
The second things is that the heating system is kind of intermittent. Yesterday the air from the heater would start to get cool while I was sitting at stoplights, and at the same time, the guage would drop down as well.
I figure there are four things to check and or replace. The thermostat, the temp sender, the radiator and the water pump. The thermostat has been replaced, the sender was replaced a few months ago but it acting strangely, the radiator needs to be fixed or replaced, and I don't know much about the condition of the water pump, but I felt both of the hoses on the radiator and they were both warm, so I'm guessing that fluid is moving through it.
I'm thinking the next thing I need to do is replace or fix the radiator, and burp it, and see where I am then. Does this sound about right to you guys? Or am I completely off base here?
Now how difficult is it to pull the radiator? I only have a Haynes book, and it doesn't have any pictures or diagrams for a 60. Or would I be better off just having a shop do it? Should I try to have the radiator repaired, or just get a new one?
Thanks in advance guys.
