Well lately ive been having a problem with 84 fj60 and the temp.

when i am driving on the highway the temp. is fine but as soon as i hit traffic and slow down the temp gauge jumps right to the edge of the red zone. O guess because it dosnt have the air being forced into it. it started doing this resently when i put the air intake house back on. i figure the problems could be the folowing....

1. temp gauge is bad.( replaced a year and a half ago)
2. new performance header is causing it.
3. dirty air filter??
4. idont know.......thats what yer opinions are for.

would an auxilary fan mounted on the radiator help?

also i have just recently flushed and filled the radiator so i know it isnt low.

my 2¢ lies on a plugged or partially blocked radiator core. since the temp is good at highway speeds when a great deal of air is moving through the cooling fins but shoots to high at slow speeds, i'm guessing you may have dislodged some scale and/or rust that became plugged in the core when you flushed the system.

just a hunch, but that what 2¢ buys you ;)

I second the 'congested radiator' diagnosis: BTDT.

If it's origninal radiator, it may not tolerate 'rodding' (copper get's brittle with age & heat;
be ready to replace.

That's definately a logical conclusion.

Possibly a malfunctioning fan clutch? As in it doesn't work properly so when not enough air is going through the radiator, it heats up.

Probably clogged though. Just check the fan.

old, over-simplistic aphorism: Hot on highway...Radiator, hot around town...Fan clutch.

 the radiator was replaced about 5 years ago... how do i check my fan clutch?

fan clutch ......fan clutch.......fan clutch i bought a 89 fj62 for a $100.00 for parts ......... told blown head ...bad motor i replaced the fan clutch ...$ 47.00 local parts store been driving ever since a yaer now runs great low temp all around ......................... good luck

Problem Solved

POBLEM SOLVED!!!!

on the way to gilmer tx to go to barn hill mt. ( see pics here http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/blueboxfj60/my_photos ) i was still having the overheating problem and had to ride the whole way with the heat on and the windows down and only got 15 mpg due to the heat. and in my hot ride to gilmer i began thinking when the overheating problem started. It was the same time as a got the header and made my intake. I know it couldnt be the new header because it was supposed to bring engine heat down below the engine and increase mpg.

when i got to gilmer i took of my homade air intake(picture below) trying not to suck up to much dust into the filter. i put it on a couple of mounths ago to replace the old stock intake that had holes in it.

well i left it off on the way home and BAM not heater on and no overheating and i got 16.5mpg!!!!!(all time record for Big Blue )

i dont know how a 2 ft section of hose could effect the engine heat so drastically but once again i got away with out shellin out a handful of cash
