OK, Flame away I searched and found nothing, but I am sure I'm not the first to ask about this. Also I don't know if this goes on tech section or chit chat?
Anyhow was driving down the freeway an saw a billboard for this company claiming "your truck can get 30MPG" Or something like that.
Anyone ever try one of these overdrive units? from either
OverDriveIt.com Toll Free: Customer Support 1-855-533-7483 Flagstaff Az.
or what seems to be more of a real company:
Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions.
If so ....
What truck, 100, 80, 60, 70 series... etc,
Any real improvement in MPG
Impressions worth it not worth it.. etc..
Cheers!

Hi, I'm Ken Sucher. I am a representative for Innovative Gearing Research, and work at OverDriveIt.com. Before I became an IGR representative, a good friend of mine, who's name is Wayne, owns a 1992 Ford F-350 four-door diesel non-turbo with auto transmission, mentioned one day that he had heard about OverDriveIt.com; and because he was only getting about 15 MPG, he ordered the instruction manuals and the DVD. He then found a transmission to modify into an overdrive unit, and ordered the overdrive modification parts kit. I personally helped him install the overdrive in the 1992 Ford. This is the same truck on the OverDriveIt website. The first mileage test we did with the overdrive not engaged, we got 15 MPG dead-on. The next test, run with the overdrive engaged, netted exactly 30 MPG. The 30 MPG figure is actually a very conservative number, because we did one more test run, in which we engaged both the new overdrive unit, and the overdrive button on the automatic transmission, and wound up getting an unbelievable 38 MPG! But, because of the super high gearing, the truck was pretty gutless. Nevertheless, we thought that under the circumstances, the 30 MPG test would be a pretty fair figure to post. I noticed that you mentioned the Gear Vendors company. Personally, I don't know if you work for Gear Vendors or not, but Innovative Gearing Research is not competing with the Gear Vendors company at all. Gear Vendors builds a much more sophisticated unit, and I actually would have liked to purchase one. The only problem was that I could not afford one. We, at Innovative Gearing Research, have high regards for the Gear Vendors company. And if you can afford a Gear Vendors unit, we recommend that you purchase one. At Innovative Gearing Research, what we offer is an economical and relatively easy overdrive to build, which is so simple and versatile that almost anyone can own one, and enjoy, in most cases, very spectacular fuel mileage. You can mount one in just about any full-sized truck or SUV, and even in some rear-wheel-drive cars.

I hope this gives you the answer you were looking for. You can find out more at OverDriveIt.com.

Thank you.

Looks like it's a 2wd only option, so no-go for the 80 series or newer. Appears to be a transfer case run backward right? Interesting idea. I'm skeptical about getting any meaningful mpg gains on a 4wd suv like a cruiser that is tapping most of it's hp at cruising speed anyway. I'm just thinking it's really not a similar situation to a diesel pickup or high hp car.

I do notice that GearVendors is talking about a 20 to 28% mileage gain while OverDriveIt is talking a 200% mileage gain and then a 253% mileage gain... Ummm....

To Jetboy,

This is directly quoted from the OverDriveIt website home page:

"It will also work on four-wheel-drive vehicles as long as the vehicle can be shifted from two-to-four-wheel-drive, and is not a full-time four-wheel drive. It will not work on front-wheel-drive vehicles."

The 80 series LC is full-time 4wd. You'd need locking hubs and a transfer case mod.

and to think that all those thousands of engineers working at the big car manufacturers spent years and millions (billions?) trying to eke out a few lousy mpgs to increase their CAFE ratings while tinkering endlessly with engine curves, soft spots, gear ratios, computers and the like...

I'm very sorry to correct you, but we never specifically said that we got any percentage increases in fuel mileage. We basically stated that in our most recent test we did on the Ford F-350 diesel, we doubled the fuel mileage. When you start throwing around percentages, it's very confusing to people because you're percentages are always different depending on which way you look at it. So, we just state the mileage increases. That way we don't confuse anybody, and we state the truth.
