Brought her out of a 1.5 year retirement yesterday to start getting her prepped for J**p safari (someone needs to watch over the heeps...;p ), starting with new shoes...

swapped the 33x10.50 tsl's over from the 40, getting rid of the 32x11.50 BFG's. Lovin' it so far, but gears have gotta get done. On that note, eventually I want to do SOA w/36's, and don't want to change gears twice. will 4.56 be adequate when i go bigger?

Also looking for front and rear bumper ideas, as I tore the previous one (with x-member) off while pulling stumps. Any pics of a Warn 8274 mounted on the front of a 60 would be great too.

Kind of a meandering post, but have a lot of ideas kickin around as to what to do to it short term as well as long term. basically looking to go for a dedicated trail rig to haul the family in a little more comfort than the 40. Any feedback from you guys is greatly appreciated.

Smart thinking...most people there gears (barely at that, from 4.11s to 4.56s) to accomodate their new tire size, but don't realize they'll want bigger or better sooner than they think.
A lil over revving is no prob for the cruiser, so you should just order some 4.88s and be done with it...the 4.56s would be alright with 36s, but I recommend lower so that you give yourself more power multiplication from that yota powerplant.
4.88s are truly meant for 37s usually, but it's all personal preference...at least with the 4.88s you can still go bigger (who knows, you might change your mind). Maybe you'll want 37s or 38s, so keep an open mind.
good luck, great pic. nothing like a retired beast coming back for more!!!

Wow, she has be hibernating. Looks like a great idea to go for a trail rig. (No need to worry about body damge) :)

I say 4.88's if you are looking to go larger later down the road. But you could get some fj62 3rds for now to make do. And then when you move up to 36's or whatever then you could sell the 62 thirds and get your originals loaded with new gears, bearing, etc.

There are a few cool bumpers on threads around that were custom made. the one I think is really cool is by "The Dude" just search under his name and put "bumper" under the words to search.

I see you are in Utah (plate) where? I am in Taylorsville...

here a pic of my bumper and winch the pic is my avatar

Cool. I rarely see any other 60/62's around here...

No kidding--mine had been mothballed due to family stuff (i.e. wife wasn't digging it, lol) and some nice body damage down in Moab--"Body Snatcher" is well named. I have been eyeballing a 60 that has been sitting at an emission shop for well over a year, and upon inquiry, found that the guy was into in $3k already and it didn't even run yet.

So I thought, "to hell with it--I am gonna build the 60, even if she ain't cherry". (My 40 makes my 60 look brand new). I am excited about the whole thing, as I love the wagon style, and I can beat the life out of it and the wife won't care:D .
I'll keep pics posted as things change up on it, but any ideas out there are appreciated.

Here is mine...I wish I had something like your rig to chop the fenders out, throw on a set of 35's and play with without fear of hurting my rig...

battered fj60s and gearing

There is definitely something to be said for beat up and ugly.

I use to have a nice rust free 60 bit was always worried about how it looked and preventing or seeing small rust spots. If you have a super clean 60 or 62 you want to keep them that way because you know they are hard to come by, and you feel the need to preserve them.

After my clean 60 was side swiped by teenage girls in their mom's car it became a truck. It was the best thing that could happen.

If you have a dented or rusted truck you stop caring about how often you wash it. You start to wish some one would hit you again so you could get more money from the insurance company and buy more parts and tools.

I got Lucky, It was a total loss. Ins. paid me top $ for it, I bought it back from Ins. for $500 and drove it for a year. I bought another fj60 (rusty) from a friend at work, and bought a 4wheeler (ATV) with the money.

Now I have a rusty fj60 DD and a clean but dented up fj60 project truck.

Oilcan,
check out this post for more info on gearing. (post # 17)
