Wow. Just checked the price on a new charcoal canister for my 2f. Over $300.

Is this thing really necessary? Can I detatch it without major consequences?

bh

Which one is it? The one near the distributor is fixed to a vent line from the tank and also acts as an expansion chamber. It has some valves in it that open when there is some pressure in the tank.
It keeps the fuel pressure in balance.
Other cars Ive owned had a dramatic increase in fuel consumption when removed.

The other canister near the carb catches fumes from the carb when not in use,not sure about that one.

Get a used one out of a wreck and read the FSM for how to check the valve operation.

Your 60 has TWO charcoal canisters? Seriously though, get a used one.

Its actually a 73 series but identical to an aussie spec 60 with 2 canisters.
Now it has no charcoal canisters as it is now diesel:D

Thanks to all. I'm not sure if there is anything wrong with the charcoal Canister(s) presently installed. I was just going through the emissions manual and it was the next thing on the list.

What is their life span?
How do I know if it's working right?

bh

Follow the outline in the Emission Manual -- but basically, IIRC, if you can blow low pressure compressed air through it, the canister is working. If you can't get anything to come out then it may be blocked.
