The summer has flown by and I think we all need to take a couple days to unwind in the wilderness. To allow for more relaxation, I’m suggesting a change of plans this year. This will be a fee free event. Everyone will need to be self-reliant when it comes to food.

Here’s what I’m thinking. To avoid the chaos of overcrowded access roads and angry hikers, I plan to drive out to the gap late in the afternoon/early evening on Friday and stay through to Sunday.

Please note these trails are all capable in a stock land cruiser. That being said things can happen. Please make sure you are prepared. A fire extinguisher is a must. I suggest to have some tools. You certainly need a spare tire. Most of the trails will be mostly scratch free except for saturday and Sunday. By far the most amazing campsite but it comes at a cost. A past club officer made the mistake of saying you will get light pinstriping. It’s major pinstriping. In some spots the trail is narrower than your truck. If you want to camp but don’t want the damage you can park at the trailhead in a parking spot, throw your camping stuff in one of the other trucks and ride along. I wouldn’t suggest bringing your kids if you do that but I’m sure wives and dogs are fine. Speaking of dogs. If you are bringing a dog that doesn’t get along with other dogs make sure you have him on a leash.

We are also in the mountains where rain showers and wind can be a factor. Be prepared! We will likely bring the club 10x20 canopy for rain at night.

Also note we are in black bear country. Don’t put food in your tent. We can string up trash at night.

My first OTMT. What kind of range are we looking at (i.e. do we need extra fuel)? Which radio system are we using? Thanks.

only 2.27 miles from parking to campsite. Easy distance from civilization. I think i’ve filled up just before Sierra Nevada and didn’t refuel til Sunday for the ride home both times ive been.
The club/ crowd can still be mixed on radios. I thought all were making transition to GMRS but i know some still run HAM on baofeng or are tuned to GMRS.
trail is easy
stripes from brush are not.
this can’t be over emphasized.

Thanks @Yotahead52. I have a pair of GMRS handhelds but have had to borrow HAM last couple of rides. Willing to pick up one if that’s what I need.

The hams *might* be able to tune to a GMRS freq. Avoid channels 10-14 because they only transmit at 0.5W

When and where do we meet? I’ll be coming from Blk Mtn. Thanks.

I plan to get to the spot about 4-5pm. I’ll pm you coordinates.

Sad to say I have to back out as well. I had a few surprises pop up this week that will stop me from getting there until late Saturday at best.
Sorry to hear that. I have a bottle of Ardbeg 10 to share with you.

What time do you plan on heading out? I could meet you and take the BRP all the way
I can leave anytime after lunch. My drive time to the parking lot is about 1.5+ hours but I need to get fuel and groceries on the way. I can pick up BRP around Bent Creek or head down towards Pisgah Forest and US276.
