Can the caps on original battery be un-screwed/popped so I can check the water level? There are 6 flush caps with large phillips like slots on top. Do I need a special tool to remove these?

I replaced this battery but am curious whether original just lost water as the car spent few years in Florida

Not sure what type of battery you have. If it's a basic Lead-Acid battery it can be checked. It goes without saying that you should wear hand/eye protection. Use distilled water only to fill any low cells.
