If you're restoring the trailer to in-service appearance, finding one of the original tarps is important.
But if you want the tarp to use the trailer for the trail, consider that original tarps may be as much as 20 years old. An aged tarp is unlikely to hold up to rugged use and will be relatively expensive to buy and hard to replace.
The M101 CDN Yahoo group file area has the diagram below, along with other great reference info, like the original operation and maintenance docs.
If you get one of the roughly 5' x 7' tarps, you can adapt the measurements in the pdf to install grommets like the original has. I actually installed a few more for a better fit. This works great if you'll be covering loads that don't protrude much above the bed of the trailer. Get some bungee cord material to hold it down tight by looping it under the tarp hooks.
This small tarp also works well with the PVC bows that members of the M101 CDN Yahoo group document in other files. This is a great combination if you're running around town, picking up stuff and just need a set-up that keeps rain or snow rolling off while making it easy to to loosen the tarp to put things under cover and out of sight.
I actually have two tarps now. If you're going to be hauling stuff that projects above the bed extensively, then go with the next size larger tarp, roughly a 6' x 8' tarp. Install the extra grommets per the diagram and whatever extra ones you think will neaten it up, along with the bungee.
I haven't tried this larger tarp with the PVC bows yet, but it works great with a packed trailer. I suspect the existing bows will be too short to use with this larger tarp, but PVC is so dirt cheap I'll make a new set to work with this tarp if I really need it.
well i am sorry but i have not had any sucsess finding the guys phone # i have asked a couple of guys who might have it still , but... no luck, the guy who had the tarps also had 3 m101's but that was a yr ago, he was located just south of ottawa.
