I have the opportunity to buy a 1987 Toyota 4runner ($1000.00). Not SR5. 300K miles. 4 cylinder. NO RUST (Arizona vehicle). Paint faded. Minor scratches/dings. Has sat last 6 months. Tires 80%. New brakes ($500.00). Lady owned it to haul her dogs around. Interior is rough. Has only been used in 4 wheel drive a few times.

Give me your opinions. She says it runs good. My main concern is the 300K.


Your thoughts?
 
Do it! I had an 85 truck 4X4 that thing was the Energizer bunny. I beat the holy hell out of that thing. It was a beast!
I had 200K on mine before I sold it. Jump on that offer
 
Even with a 22RE you're still looking at a rebuild shortly.

Other stuff that fails on late 80s:

Alternators
Starters
Radiators
H20 Pumps
Axle seals

So would you pay $2500 for it a year from now w/ a rebuilt engine?

anything gut the factory red.
Axle seals
If wheeled it inhibits failure, but inevetable.

Green coolant is fine as long as you don't use extended life or mix it with Toyota red. Radiators age due to constant thermal cycling, water pumps wear out.
 
some of the the 350K mile plus toyotas ive seen, that have always used geniuine toyota red coolant, with regular maintenence still have the factory hoses intact.

generic coolants sure dont help the radiator. the rest is wear and tear.
The Genuine coolant helps prolong water pump life.
I have replaced em though, even after 300K of red coolant.

when the 22RE is compared to 90% of the rest of this nations engine market,
its without a doubt the best, longest living and most rugged, dependable workhorses out there.
