I'm thinking of doing this mod on my rig and just looking for opinions on it: worthwhile, ease of install, ease of use etc. Thanks!

It's a fairly easy install, about 3hrs with the body off. It'will take longer with the body on. I haven't dirven the Truck yet, but it seems to engage with ease. Very little linkage to worry about. I think when Toyota designed the linkage they were thinink too hard about it.

Make sure they carry exactly what you need when you order it! I ordered the twin stick and told them I had a split case mated to a sm420 via the larger adapter and was assured that the kit I was ordering was what I needed by the lady taking the order. Needless to say, I got the kit, waited a month to install it, and it turned out it was for my setup but with the shorter adapter. Even worse was they wouldn't let me return it. Lesson learned.

At some point I'll make the kit work, it just sucks when you pay nearly 200 bucks for something, only to find out that it's not what you need, and they won't take it back.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here and say that a twin stick certainly has a high cool factor, but can you really accomplish anything with a twin stick that you can't do with a stock linkage? Agreed that if you have an SM420/465 the stock TC linkage will not bolt right up, but with some minor mods, it should work just fine.

Maybe Poser will chime in here.

Who did you purchase this from SOR?

Have installed a few of them, and they work well.

I do not look at them as a 'bolt on' conversion....there may be some modifications required to make them work with your specific application...no big deal.

A twin stick set up for a pre 1976 Land Cruiser would be a vast improvement over the stock ambigu-shift feature that the early floor controlled transfer cases have after thirty-plus years of service.

I like mine cause I can shift into 2 low to get the truck loaded on the trailer or any other situation that comes up where I need to move slow in 2wd. You just have to move one lever to get into low range.

And it is a vast improvement over the stock shifter that was in my '76.

Besides the bling, they don't accomplish anything that the single stick can't do.

Yes, It is my understanding that a stock shifter can be modified to acomplish the samething == 2wheel low. Is that correct Pin Head? As far as searching for that mod here, do we have a good step by step on this mod in our archives?

It is as simple as removing the gate on the shifter, or cutting it.

The reason I want this is that my linkage is completely shot and it is very hard to shift into any position solidly and I like the 2 low idea for going down very tight switch backs...possibly saving a little stress on the birfs in the process.

You will like it.

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know how it goes.

Post up pictures of your install so I can add this to the FAQ.

Will do!

You WILL like it.

I duped (with mods to avoid patent infringement :) ) the AA kit and like very much the positive shifting as compared to the stock setup. Both shifters work beautifully with defined positions so you know that what you wanted is engaged or not. You can FEEL the detents as the shift ball moves from one to another.

Very much recommended if you like your shifting to have a refined feel like it's made of gold like for an expensive sportscar.

I welded the sticks into the blocks after setting their position and made one three inches shorter than the other. Used 1/2" rod for the levers threaded for hardware store shift balls.

If I were to do it again I'd have drilled the holes in the blocks smaller to allow the shift levers to be threaded into them with a locknut. The reason for it is that if I need to remove the setup I'll have to manuever the shifters down through the floorboard. Not too difficult, but it would have been better if they were removable.

nuff said?

I'm happy with mine.
I did have to play with it, but it wasn't that bad. The hardest thing I had to do was buy a piece of round stock and cut some threads on it to get a little more throw out of the linkage. I didn't pay much attention to how long it took to install. Probably less than two hours with the Tranny/Toy box/T-case on the bench, then another hour adjusting in the rig. I spent more time trying to figure out how to avoid spending the $185. :D In the end I'm glad I bit the bullet and spent the cash.

Just for comparision years ago I did a Hurst column to floor shift conversion on a Ford that took a whole lot more finagling to work. My Dad and I spent the better part of two days fooling around with that.

Those that have a front auto locker will find being able to shift into and out of 4WD w/o changing range to be an advantage.
