So lately I've posted about new suspension and such for my BJ74 (Chewbacca), and I was able to track down a set of barely used OME everything (springs, shocks, shackles, bushings etc). I live in alberta and Chewbacca is going to be exposed to salt and snow with a vengence. I was wondering if there is any way that I could, before the install, take a wire wheel to the leafs and shackles, then paint, rust proof, or "undercoat" them to prevent further rust.

Your guys' thoughts?

Fluid Film, a vendor on mud. Pretty good stuff from what I have read.

My BJ70 came with a bunch of black gooey undercoating all over the bottom of it from it's time in Ontario, if you live up north, check some of the auto shops and dealerships on recommendations. Only problem with coating the metal, it is out of sight, out of mind and eventually moisture, salt, whatever will get under the coating and you won't know or see it until surface rust has a foot hold.

I lived in NY and they salt the roads like nobody's business. If you decide not to coat, then wash the truck on a regular basis to include the undercarriage. In the warm months, prep and treat any corrosion spots that pop up before the next winter.

Check with your local club guys, see what they use:meh:

Fluid film is great stuff but it won't stay on long enough in that kind of application. I get my truck sprayed at Krown once a year. Doesn't keep the leaf springs from being rusty though. Some just clean it up and use black rust paint like rustoleum etc.
