About a week ago, I had accelerator to the floor climbing a hill when suddenly the cruiser went into full throttle. I nursed it home.

Checked movement of the throttle cable in the housing, doesn't seem to be a problem. Had the carb professionally rebuilt, carb now works great but the machine still idles high, not as bad as before, but still idles high. Adjusted the idle to the correct speed by operating the linkage manually. Still seems like the linkage doesn't want to settle back all the way to the proper idle speed after I step on the accelerator. Pedal seems to be all the way up off the floor so there isnt any more up movement. Need silicone lube in the cable housing????

Please offer suggestions, man. I been without my machine for 2 weeks and I am having withdrawal!!!

1966 Rig, stock 2 barrel Aisan carb, may not be original. Cable, no linkage, like the one in SOR for the '68-'72. I wouldn't know how to change the return spring. Don't know if that would help, as was working fine before the problem and when it stuck, it was as if something let loose, it was al of a sudden in full open.

As was said before,I would also suspect the return spring on the carb linkage(drivers side of the carb on mine where carb meets intake) or accelerator pedal itself.

Ive had my cable linkage stick a few times and then stuck wide open and wouldn't release  You can try to lube the cable and see if that helps I replaced mine with a univeral cable from a hotrod shop. I would go with stiffer return spring first or double springs and see if that helps

The return spring is really easy to change. It's not an internal component. It's just a spring that's mounted horizontally near the base of your carb. You should be able to pick up a generic replacement at any of the chain auto parts stores. It should be out on the sales floor. The spring just has a hook on each end that anchors it. You don't really need any tools to remove/reinstall it, but pliers are helpful. A shot of spray lubricant into the housing of the throttle cable is never a bad idea either.

Also, make sure the external linkage on the side of your carb isn't binding at full throttle. A little carb cleaner or spray lube could do wonders there as well. Also, your 2bbl carb is not a stock application for your 40. It would have originally come with a 1bbl.

Thanks to all the responders here! Some good stuff. I suspected the spring too, but was unable to find the broken ends from the old one, if there was one in the first place. Anyone have any pics of where the return spring sits on the Aisan 2BBL?

I bought the rig used from some guy in my area, who said there had been lots of mods done. They removed the old head and changes the valves, guides, etc so it can run on unleaded. And maybe they changed out the carb at that time. I suspected it wasn't original by all the stuff I have read. And as always there are many pieces that just fall off, or are removed and not replaced by other owners.

As a temp fix, hook one end of a generic auto parts spring to the throttle linkage on the carb and the other to any fixed part available. On my weber, I went from the linkage to the underside of the intake. That should pull it back into place. Another thing to check is the cable....I had one fray inside the sheathing. The unwinding wire snagged against the metal sheathing and would not let the throttle return all the way to the stop. The pedal seemed normal because of the increased length of the unwinding wire. It broke shortly after and thats when I figured out the problem.

Good Luck!

Thanks 40s rock, and all. I looked in my box of springs for one, but none long enough. A trip to the auto supply is going to happen. My cable is one that is sheathed in plastic, inside the metal housing, so while it might have frayed, it moves well in the housing. Also, almost seems like something binds in the linkage an 8th inch from the idle screw touching the stop plate when I let off the accelerator. Nothing I can see,
