My Land Cruiser us a 1pz 1991 jpz70

I tried to change the oil and when I unscrewed the sump nut i found that the nut was not the right size and somebody had wrapped a piece of metal wire around the thread on the nut to make it stay in place.

My question is what type of thread is on the sump? Is it mm or some other?

Has anyone got a remedy for this problem?

Thanks in advance

dave

ouch...

Are the threads in the pan still in good shape? If they are maybe you can order a drain plug from ENS industrial toyota in Saskatoon. I am guessing your Canadian(based on year of rig, jdm import)... but it helps to list location, or say where you are in the thread when asking where to find something.

GandScruiser parts in Vancouver may be able to send an emergency plug.

Another thing you could try is to measure the hole, and go to a wreaking yard and see if you can measure some toyota plugs on old engines. May luck out.

It would be metric for sure. Everything on it is metric.

If the threads are shot on the pan, you will have pull the pan off and go see a machine shop for helicoil repair. Or have them weld on a new bung.

Thanks Brown Bear,

I am in Panama, central america, my LC is a japanese import. I will try and find a wrecking yard and if no luck then I will get it welded.

Is it difficult to take off the oil pan when the jeep is not jacked up?

The easiest way is to jack the chassis up to create some room between the front axle and pan.
Or undo the engine mounts and lift the engine an inch or 2.
The hard part is breaking the sealant they use on the oil pan without bending or denting the pan.
I used a thin blade to saw through it.

IMO you should try to fix it 1st without removing the pan

I was able to take my 60 series BJ pan off while on it's wheels. But it was a pain.

I had to use flat knives to cut in there. Then a razor to scrape it clean prior to re-install.

If the threads are good, then don't remove it.

When I look at your name I know see the panama in it... we have a few members on here from panama. One guy, Tapage, is on here quite a bit.

Try Loctite 79040 (Chisel® Gasket Remover (Methylene Chloride)
). It works a treat at removing gasket residue and paint in seconds. Truely it is a spray on and wipe off product. The down side is you need chemical resitant gloves, a mask and eye protection as it can also do a number on you. And yes, only use in well ventilated areas.

yah I've used gasket remover before. It works. Might be hard to spray under the truck. But would work on the pan outside.
