decided to go explore the Gorman / Mt Pinos area for a couple of days.

This is a spur of the moment thing with the kids, so no definite plans yet, but will likely camp either at Hungry Valley or if possible in one of the campgrounds up the mountain W. of there, maybe at the top of Miller if IIRC that there is one up there. Will be in a silver 80 with a Fleetwood popup trailer. Long shot I'm sure but if anybody is in the area, or bored at home, it would be great to meet you and maybe do a trail or 2.

Will try and check if I can get PMs in town. Will monitor channel 7 on FRS/GMRS. My portable CB not receiving beans but will set it to 7 also, just in case.

update (from the 'flying J)

I'm on top of Alamo Mountain (6700 ft) at Dutchman Cmpgrd (top of Miller trail), weather is fantastic, not too hot. Piru creek is running strong, lots of water. Only 1 other site occupied (motorcyclists). Most campgrounds are empty.
It's great.
No phone contact up there though.

Great time. Highly recommended. Campground is in the middle of big trees. Stars like you wouldn't believe. Campfires OK. Life is good!

Eric,
Sorry, I cannot make it. This is is busy time at work. Hope you have a good time with your family. :)

Eric, post some pics.........you remembered to bring a camera. See any bears?
Cheers, Cliff

OK, am back. Not long enough, but oh well.

Main finding: amazingly enough, 1 hour from 10 million angelenos, it is still possible to be by yourself at the top of a mountain in an otherwise empty wild campground, but easily enough reachable that I took our popup trailer up the dirt roads... well, at least if you go during the week.

It was beauuutiful! Yes saw a bear close up. That thing ran away fast. Was (I think) a brown black bear. Saw 2 golden eagles, coyotes, deers. And a few motorcyclists. Bathed in Piru Creek.

Dutchman campground near the top of Alamo Mountain is just great. Very spacious. Maybe 10 sites or so, but something like 100 yds apart from one another. Big trees although not that much shade.

No photo, sorry.

The Alamo Mtn loop has a couple side trials open (gates permitting). As yes, it is amazing the solitude so close to the city, even in an ORV area!!

well, it's a good hour up from Hungry Valley, half of that on a dirt road, so that helps... :)
