Anybody ever built an off road style boat trailer? Or modified a normal one to be a little more heavy duty? I've seen some badazz setups in Australia, and while I don't need anything that extreme they sure look cool. I don't really need anything like that, I'd just like something with a little more ground clearance and heavier duty. Most boat trailers seem to be built just sturdy enough to carry a boat down a smooth road.

Is the boat we would be carrying a row boat?...or a 24' bow rider?

That would probably have a an impact on the size and weight...

Older trailers used shocks instead of springs. This worked with 25hp and under motors on 16 foot or less aluminum boats. They were easy to pull through difficult terrain. mike

Just a small jon boat, 14-18'(haven't bought it yet). I've got a trailer that's for a small bass boat that I was thinking about using when I do. I just took a buddy's little 1436 down a rough, rutted dirt road and it needed more clearance, bigger tires(actually bounced around enough going in 4l 1st gr to pop the tire off the rim). All that is relatively easialy fixed, guess I was just mostly curious to see if any of you hardcore off-roaders had any cool boat trailers like the ones I've seen in Australia. Kinda like these:

I also did a shackle reversal on my trailer to get more clearance. MIke

Here's an M116A2 build that I did, very simple, but rugged.

If you can picture a rack built a couple of feet off the bed, you could easily slide the boat on upside down, and plenty of room for gear , if you built some simple sides. The frame can handle at least 3/4 ton, and probably any off road conditions you can throw at it.

Just a thought..

Cool trailer; if I were gonna be hauling several small duck boats I would probably actually want something like that. I think loading and unloading a jon boat with a motor and all the gear in it ever time would just be too much trouble for me.

I see what you're saying.....maybe you could lose the metal bed, extend the tongue, and utilize the frame and axle to accommodate off road conditions.

The problem with having bigger tires and higher clearances, is you need to find a deeper spot to launch...

It's never easy, is it?
