I still have the OEM stereo that Mr. T gave us in the rig. Recently, especially on hot days, as i kick it down the highway and reach about 65mph and more, the CD player only (not radio or tape) will start to sound real scratchy and tweaky? Best way to describe it is as if the CD is all scratched up. As i slow down in town, the scratch/tweak goes away. I was thinking it was a heat issue, but i honestly don't know much at all about stereo's. Could it be a ground, or maybe the unit is just old and needs replacing?

Any thoughts?

Normally sound related things are from interference from other eletrical items like the plugs or a ground, it's weird that it's only the CD and not the radio or tape. Have you tried other CDs?

yep, tried other CDs. Still does it. I can slow down after i get off the highway and the static cracking/tweaky sound goes away and the CD plays clear.

You've hit a resonant frequency in the CD player mechanicals, and the vibrations are causing the laser to observe too many errors to read the audio data off the CD correctly. You may have some loose mounting screws inside the dash that need to be tightened up, or some damping material that has become compromised over time.

zcruiser, i think you may be correct. It has gotten worse over time. Fact is, when i purchased the rig 5 or 6 years ago, the PO had the stereo stolen. It was literally ripped out. He replaced it with another OEM stereo, but all the associated mounting bracketing was gone; so the new stereo literally lays in the slot. It does shake around when i'm driving.

it used to only do it occasionally, but now it's getting pretty regular.

Ah, the truth comes out!

Ah, the truth comes out!

There was no hiding of the truth :flipoff2:

it has never done this at nearly this level before. The whole time the stereo has just been sitting in there, not secured; but it hasn't been tweaking out like this at speed. Maybe the laser has just gotten worn out from all the work.

Maybe you need to do a balance job on your tires?

CD players need a laser alignment after a couple of years. It is usually around $100. Given that yours has been bouncing around I think the laser alignment in yours is particularly bad.

You can probably find someone who put in an aftermarket deck to sell you their factory deck for a lot less than $100. It would also help clean out their garage. With that thing :bounce::bounce2: around for a few years who knows what else is loose in there!

What's missing from your dash? Is it just the bracket for the radio or did they tear up the mounting points on the dash?
