Does anyone know if anybody has come out with a jerry can mount that fits on the factory roof rack? i'm very happy with the axe/shovel and the hi-lift mounts that i purchased through Specter Off Road. I'd like to be able to carry some extra fuel and Water into the field but so far I can't find anything.

Yes, Luke at www.fourtreks.com has a product that would work.
It works with the 1.75" rings to mount on the stock rack.

I bought the part from him, but I have not gone out and bought a jerrycan holder again yet.
I gave my last one away with my Yakima rack from the old rig.

I do not have a picture of the item, but it is a bar that can sit vertical or horizontally depending on how you mount it.

The bar has some bolts with it, and you could run them through the back of one of those shorty red jerrycan holders.

Lemme see if Luke has the item up on his website.
Standby please :D

Found it, it is the fire extinguisher mount.

Mine is on my PC table as I type.
You could get away with one of these I bet, as the maximum width of the holes is about 6", that should hold a mount like the one I had before.
That mount below will hold a 2.5 or 5 gallon jerrycan.
I ran the smaller sized can.

Sweet, Thanks! Man, this forum kicks ass.

I can post pics later,

I put 2 Blitz Jerry can mounts on the roof rack with Yakama mounts and Conn-Fer mounts.

PM me and remind me to find the pics. Or if I remember I will post later for you.

Here is the pic as promised. I think I used the H-23 mounts.

Cool,, you used those fire extinguisher mounts I posted above.

Where did you order your plastic cans from?
Not sure if I would want to put my metal Wedco can on its side, but I think the plastic ones would be better for that.

So I'd like to order the clamps from fourtreks but I don't know what the diameter of the tubing on the factory roof rack is. Can anyone let me know what that diameter would be? Thanks.

I'm gonna run the same setup as you mlrfjc. I ordered the perpendicular mounts, blitz holders, blitz metal gas can, and the blue water carrier. The holders and cans came today. They are really nice. No leaks at all. They look nice too.

I only just saw this with a recent bump. Yeah, I think I first saw the FourTreks in one of your posts or on your website and combined it with the Blitz Jerry can holders and lying the cans flat.

The cans are Scepter NATO (non CARB) cans. It looks like you can no longer get these cans shipped to Cali, and it also looks like Scepter is going to discontinue shipping these to the US completely in the New Year, which sucks because these cans rule.

I was real scared of putting metal or CARB cans on their side - but if the Blitz metal cans work on their side, that's awesome. I don't have to worry about damaging my plastic guys and not being able to replace them...

Cool. Let me know how it works out for you.

The Blitz gas cans are legal in all 50 states and shipping is not an issue. I don't know why the other one can't be shipped to certain states.

Hey mlrfjc,
I really suggest replacing those straps used to hold the cans in the holders. Those weak plastic clips will snap in a second if you had an accident with those cans full of fluid. I found some nice ones of the same width strap with a nice metal ratcheting buckle. I also got a Python cable lock by masterlock and locked each one to the rack. Prevents theft and those cans aren't going anywhere even if I had a head on into a brick wall. It looks great too! I'll post pics as soon as my professor shows me how to condense the photo files i have so i can post them.

This is the CRAZYHERMIT's rig as taken through my windshield. One of the Toyota Trail Teams FJ's is in front of him (I think it's Gustaf). (photo date October 07)

Same trip, my rig crossing a puddle after fording the Delores River (Colorado). That's WOODY of IH8MUD fame with his camera standing to the right.

Note that the fuel cans aren't in mounts. There are two schools of thought on this and I have jerry cans with mounts and decided to go instead to 3 x 10 liter plastic cans that I cinch strap down. They don't go anywhere either and they're easy to take off and pour into the tank (light and accessible). I guess there's a bit more wind drag but not such that it impacts mileage in any way I can account for. When the trip is over, off they come and it's very easy to deal with them. CRAZYHERMIT carried his water and fuel on top in another configuration - but again, not hard-mounted.

Just food for thought and some different ideas.:shotts: I hope I'm not beating a dead horse with this.

I would think the metal wedco cans would be better for laying on the side. More leak-proof? I have plastic cans and I wouldn't lay them down, they will definitely leak.

I think I am gonna go with CrazyHermits or Uphills idea. I wonder what kind of fuel and water cans those are on CrazyHermits rig??

You can PM CRAZYHERMIT - I don't know for sure which mfg. they are. There's nothing wrong with the metal cans. I have metal cans and fabricated fourtreks mounts for them. But I don't use them because this solution is simpler, more adaptable and because it "really works".

I went to smaller cans because they're easier to hoist up and down from the OEM rack. It also distributes weight more evenly. I've never needed more than 7.5 gallons of spare fuel on a run. If I was going farther, I'd bring 15 gallons.

Where did you get them from and do you have a make / product number? I've never been happy with the straps and would swap them out in a heartbeat. Thanks.
