Need some help, I just ordered some new OEM hub cap wheels and am trying to decide what shade of gray to have them powder coated, there seem to be 2 or more different grays.

the wheels will be going on my green 82 fj40, so take that into consideration as far as which color to pick.

here is a dark gray off I think a 76 fj40, this is a original wheel, not a repaint

be real cool if someone that had photochop skills could work some magic :)

also if anyone has the powdercoat codes that they used it woud be helpfull.

I am kinda leaning towards the dark gray.

thanks

Just my opinion but I don't think that ANY grey looks good with the John Deere green. It's a vivid color, that particular green, and combining it with a relatively somber dating color that transmits a sense of the dismal qualities of the depressing elements of life would be ugly. Grey is the color of bad weather, old men, and the winterof life. Prisons are grey, warships, heavy clouds. Ugh.

Also, it wouldn't be correct.

Isn't grey the color of the sky in WA state most days out of the year? :D

Of the choices offered, I'd go with the first one -- the dark grey. It could be the shadows, but I see a bit of an olive drab green tint to the grey -- might compliment the green of the rig.

Spun aluminum is the best choice with yoyr green. Since that won't work, white is the next best choice. I agree that grey is so understated that your TLC will be unhappy if you go that way.

the split rim I posted is stock AFAIK, it came off my 45LPB, actaully it came with the FF rear end from a CDN truck.

but yeah send the pic.

I will send you a photo of my stock oem split ring wheels from toyota when I get home..

well I like the gray I have on the 82 now, I think it looks good.

but I do hear you guys...............I just can't bear the thought of white wheels......even if they are hub cap wheels or the stock white spokes.

here is a 82(german spec) with the stock white spokes on it....

i like the gray with hubcaps cause it makes the cap stand out more.

so Ige, do you think the gray with caps(or without) will look good on my JD Green 40?

Here we are with OEM gray, and a little rust for texture.....

I wasn't too sure about white wheels either, but I thought it would be good to just use two colors on the truck. I like it but I may try gray sometime.
If you do go with gray get a little green mixed up that matches your body color.Mix a little in with the gray . Ties the colors together.

Pimp let me save you some time. I pulled the tire off a stock 78 rim and had pristine paint under there. I took it to my powder coater and held color cards up to it. Several different brands. The color that matches is DuPont Concrete Gray. It has just a hint of green in it like wet concrete; this would look right on your rig. Here's a pic of newly coated rim in that correct color.

Doc, I do think your onto something...........that color would look good.......I am pretty darn sure.

Ken.........I know the white spokes look correct but for some reason I am just not wild about them.....

Offwhite like RobertLadukes would also look good with most colors. To match the hard top. Robert, the sage green is sweeet.

Pimp, that top dark gray wheel is not any color I have seen before. the others are the colors of the wheels I have from all different vintages...

Also, no reason to "guess" when the wheel was made. Just check the last few digits of the stamping on it. To find the stamping, its on the outside of the wheel on the same surface that the valve stem is on, just that if the valve stem is at 6 o'clock, the stamping is at 12 o'clock. the last bit will read as a 2 digit year followed by a slash and a one or two digit month. I cant really tell what yours reads, but I have four that read "76/2" that came off my feb 1976 FJ40, and another few that came off a may 1978 that read "78/5"...etc. Also, interesting trivia... Welded wheels started way before discs. I have a few early 1974 wheels that are welded(aka "disc") wheels...

I like the stock creme wheels on it. But for hub cap wheels I like the same color that's on the wheels now for the hub cappers :0

Doc, I just had a set of 5 OEM hubcap wheels media blasted and I'm tempted to take them to a local powdercoater. What did it cost you, if you don't mind my asking? I painted my cruiser and have the capability to paint the wheels, but if powdercoating is close, I'd rather go that way.
Thanks, and I like your choice of colors. So, I just ax for Concrete Gray?
