The wife and I were out on a little trip today 1 hour from the house when the battery light came on on the dash.

I checked voltage at the battery with the engine off and it was 14.2. With the engine on it was 13.7. The voltage didn't fluctuate with an increase on RPMs. Hmmm...

So we went inside, had Indian for lunch, and then drive to Pep Boys to have a charging system test. While eating I searched the interwebs and didn't find much about stock alts going out.

At the FLAPS it was confirmed the alt was out. This happened today, 7/4, and all 3 local Toyota dealership parts depts were closed. Argh! Even Pep Boys couldn't get an alt until maybe Fri, probably Monday, and I wanted a stock or Mean Green alt anyways.

Props out to the guys at Pep Boys in Greenville SC on Laurens Rd. They wouldn't charge me, even after I insisted, because they couldn't fix the problem.

So we had Pep Boys top off our battery and we headed home. A 1 hour drive.

Soon after we left our dash started lighting up.

The ATRAC, TRAC, etc tree first lit up. Then it started raining so the lights and wipers were turned on. Soon after the brake light came on. Turning the lights off made the brake light go off for a few minutes but then it came back on.

Also, we had two routes home. One on the interstate and one back roads. We chose the interstate because it would be faster and less chance of traffic jams. We were wrong. Hello stand still traffic and about a 15-20 minute delay.

We had two Cruiser heads on stand by in case we broke down. Thanks Trollhole and Lenny.

At 1 hour the back light on the radio and radio text turned off. It came back on a few times when I hit the brakes but then it was off for good.

At 1 minute out from the house the clock started fading out. Uh oh...

We pulled into the house and the dash looked like this. I think my FJ is trying to tell me something. Now the airbag and open door lights are on.

As a test I cut the truck off and tried to restart - not even a click.

I have a couple extra batteries in the garage so I'm going to switch the low one out and head to the shop in the morning.

OEM alts run around $500 retail and Mean Green alts about $400. Mean Green claims to put out 200 amps. I might just go with that. I have a 21.5" LED bar on the bumper and a 41.5" bar and 2 pods awaiting install, winch, CB, ARB fridge, and currently only a single battery. A Piranha dual battery kit is awaiting install but hasn't happened yet.

More to come.

FWIW, I've had a Mean Green 200-amp alt on my 40 for several years and I'm really happy with it. They are beefed-up GM alternators however.

They seem to be good units but I can't find much feedback on them from people who have run them in their FJCs. If I don't need the extra juice maybe I should stay with the tried and true OEM alt...

With time as tight as it is I'm going to go OEM. It will be plug-n-play, literally. The Mean Green needs some upgraded wiring which isn't a big deal but is time I don't have right now.

I'll order the OEM alt tomorrow and post more pics.

I've been working on FJC's (my own and other's) for 7 years now, and I've never seen or even heard of a factory alternator failing until now. Denso makes a pretty solid alternator.

Good choice I think. I'm running dual-batteries, a fridge, an ARB compressor, ham & cb radios, etc. etc. all on the stock original alternator on my FJC with no problems whatsoever. I can't remember what the stock alternator is rated but IIRC it's at least 150 amps.

I haven't heard of the stock alts failing and could only find one thread on it on another forum. Seems to be pretty rare.

The FLAPS thinks they can get a Denso - so the FJ is pulled into the shop and awaiting parts.

My alternator went out on me on the way home from the Ouray summit. 95k on the clock.

If you are on a budget.

95000 Mine went out this weekend, called my local Oreilly Auto and no luck their Ultima is Lifetime Warranty and is a reman OEM 100A. So I called my brother over he has a 2007 Tacoma X-Runner, Guess what same plug, same bracket. So back on the phone with the parts man, 2007 Taco X-Runner 4.0 With towing package. He says "100 amp or 130 amp?" Well I'll take the 130 thank you very much! In stock too! $149.99 I did also upgrade the fuse in the fuse box to 140 amps to match my brothers truck witch has the 130a and re-ran a 4 ga. wire from the output up to the fuse box. My factory wire size looked to be 8 his 6 so I went 4 to be safe. So in a pinch for time or just can't afford the mean green? My 130a is doing fine so far.

Mine failed this week with 215,000 on the clock. went with a autozone remanufactured due to time and $'s. It had a good run as with the fridge, winch and dual batteries, and several dunkings I consider it to be normal.

Mine too

Not sure but mine with only 59k on it sounds like a supercharger! anyone know if that sound is the bearings or maybe just the belt. Low miles and never in mud, even has the original battery and charges fine. it just started making that high pitched sound about 2 weeks ago but since OEM failiers are rare Iam not sure, any thoughts?
