when i bought my '01 Tacoma it had a set of Pacer wheels with 265/70/16's. the vin sticker says 225/65/15 on a 15x7 for tire and wheel size. there is also a sticker in the door jamb with proper inflation psi for 265/70/16's.

the truck is an SR5. did it come with a bigger wheel and tire package? i know the p.o. put the pacers on there, but i don't know if it had OE 16's or 15's.

this whole question started when i realized my speedometer was about 5-7 mph off.

With out knowing exectly what model your truck is, it looks like 15in prob were standard on your truck. From the factory the door sticker is going to match what is on the car and the speedometer is going to be set to those tires. Some of the door stickers will have printed on the same sticker two different set of tires sizes and tire pressures. They do that to save money

Also check you spare if you have a 15 or 16 in one. The 16in size specs for one of the possible 16 in is 235/55-16

go to tire rack on line they can give you the oe sizes on several different models of tacomas

Unfortunately I don't know where off hand, there are some pages that tell factory codes and gearing on the Tacomas from the factory based off the VIN I believe. SR5 could have smaller tires than the 265's. I'll see if I can find it, otherwise google. I'll post it if I can find it.

anybody have anymore to chime in on this. seems like 15 inch tires are cheaper. i can get a set of 15 inch wheels off my buddy's totaled tacoma. this shouln't have any adverse effects should it?

IIRC, NONE of the 01-04 Tacoma's came with the bigger brakes like the 4Runners did, so 15" tires will fit. My TRD can fit 15's no problem.

Also, the door jamb stickers are useless. All of my 4Runners and now this Tacoma have said 225/75/15, but they all came from the factory with 265/70/16's.

I personally like the 16's, because they seem to balance much better than 15's. Also, the price difference wasn't that much in my case (32" BFG A/T)

Here you go Hays ... TTORA - Tire and Wheel Fitment - Faq

Some of the tacomas have bigger brakes than the big brake 4rnrs, and have the 209mm calipers. Some have the smallest brakes that would fit. That's why there is mixed reviews and inconsistent results when going to the tundra brakes (199mm).

Your best bet is to find a 15" (what's your spare btw), and manually check it.

the spare is a 265/70/16. so i guess that's what came on them, unless a p.o changed out the spare too.

a 31x10.5x15 is about the same as a 265/70/16 isn't it?

I guess I forgot about the rare Tacoma's that came with the VSC option (IIRC, only 2004's came with that option). So if you have VSC, the 15's will not work, since they're bigger. All else should fit.

And those two tire sizes are the same height and width.

vehicle stability control.

Seems as though you have the option of going with 15's, with the advantage of a taller sidewall and potentially cheaper tire prices. That said, it seems like there are more sizes and availability these days in the 16" size. I'd stick with 16's.

I just put on 255-85-16s over the old 265-75-16s that were on previously. I have a 2 lift in front, and need to increase it slightly. My old spare was the 265-70-16 like yours.
