Hey,
So, I'm in North OC. Have had my 1971 FJ40 rig for about a year. Mainly just street and daily driver use, but now I'm about to get it back from some engine/trans work, and would like to do some mild off-road. Easy stuff to start, because I'm a newb to off-raoding. Any good easy trails for off-roading. Also, any trails and good fishing for my son? (he is 7 and has the attention span of his father, so he needs to have a reasonable chance at catching something within a few hours). Anyways, looking forward to it. Last thing I need is to drive off a cliff or rip the driveline out of my rig! Much thanks..

If you pick up the book called Backcountry Adventures Southern California there are many trails to choose from.
I just did The Main Divide Road in the South Coast section # 18.
It was very easy with a few side trails if you wanted to make it a little more interesting.
I went from Corona to hwy 74 but one could go from hwy 74 up to the ridge and spend the whole day checking things out. I think a nice short trip would be from hwy.74 to Santiago Peak and then back to hwy.74 Great views from the top of the ridge and peak.
Hope this helps you out.
Ken

Come up my way and we'll hit Red Rock Canyon, Schmidt Tunnel, etc.

WHere is that at?

I-5 north
14 north

depending on where you are in OC, probably a couple of hours, tops

Calico Kid knows the place like the back of his hand. There's alot to see, and you can wheel however hard or light you want.

Are the trails in Red Rock Canyon State Park or, are they outside the park? I did see that the park requires a day use pass for OHV trails.
