I’ve seen other variations of these online or in print but never in person.

Who are these actually for? I would think snow would be the best situation for them, mud… idk, looks like a lot of tight tolerance machining where mud would be an issue.

I bet I would no longer notice those pesky speed bumps in the mall parking lot with a set of these bad boys.

They are for snow. I've seen a few of these (or similar) in action in the mountains, and they are pretty awesome.
 
They definitely put a lot of emphasis on snow in their promotiona, though they also mention mud, sand, etc.
 
There are a few sets around the eastern cascades where people have year around cabins that are snow blocked for five months a year.

Richard Hammond put a set on some Ford Fiesta variant in their recent Madagascar special. They didn't fare too well after driving along pot hole riddled asphalt and eventually gave out on sand. Great idea for use solely on snow/sand with light manicured asphalt use IMHO.
