I’m putting a 2UZ together, skip the foreplay. I’m putting a different set of pistons and rods into a block with a matched crank. The plan is to pop rod bearings out of the old rods and fit them into the new rods that will have the same bore marking and matching the bearings with where they were originally on the crank, plastigauge and make sure everything is in spec. New pistons will match correct size markings on block and ring gaps will be checked. Sound good? All these parts have very minimal miles on them and the FSM seams to have no issues reusing parts. If stuff is in spec there should be no problem correct? A new bearing set would seem logical, however, there are potentially 6 different sizes, and if there is no wear, what’s the point? Someone enlighten me.

Scratch that, under more rigorous investigations, rod bearings don’t appear to be in as good of shape as once perceived, will replace.

There is a rumor you take the last couple numbers off the block of a 22R/E to the dealer and they match a set of mains to the machine that cut them in the block or some chit like that...

Sopposed to be WAY more accurate than just going down the AutoZone and picking up a general pair.

You might want to look into if they did the same with that engine.

Its not a rumor, there are numbers stamped into the block, crank, pistons and bores that represent the dimensional range of each part. You take the number of each mating part and add them together and the FSM it indicates what bearing you will need for that spot. You match piston and bore numbers. At least that is the way it is for the 2UZ.

In my case:

Crank Pins: 2222
New Rods: 221111
Bores: 22222222
New Pistons: 22222222
Crank mains: 76676
Block mains:79676

Ex. for main #1 you add 7+7 = 14 which falls in the range of 12-17 so you use bearing #5

In hindsight it was a dumb question, the new rods don’t match the bores of the old rods anyway.
