Well, I went to replace my brake pads tonight and they look almost brand new. So, the brake pads are not what is making the grinding noise. So I checked the front diff fluid level and it is really low because of the leaking front knuckles. I hope I haven't messed the gears up! It doesn't really sound like a whining or howling that I would expect though from the gears. I don't know what it could be but I'm filling the diff to the top before I drive it again... Any thoughts? Looks like I'll be saving money for a knuckle rebuild kit for the 80. When's the next HAMOM? I'm gonna need one!

Could be wheel bearings. Is it doing it all the time. Check to see if there is any play in the wheel.grab it top and bottom, side to side and try to move it back and forth.

We will be going to Docs' place in Jan, when he has a weekend off.
I need to do a knuckle rebuild also.

Don't schedule it yet because my leave request has not yet been approved but I am shooting to be off the week of the 1st in January. And if that is the case I have a bunch of little jobs to do on the black beast. So the garage will be heated and I'll be there if it works out staffing wise we can do a pot luck on Friday and Saturday and work on some stuff. I know that I need to mount the winch, refab a new return spring for the throttle, adjust the valves an do a oil change, mount the skid plate and possibly weld on the skidders. So could be busy just on my rig but the lift will be available if we need to do knuckle job or diff work on your 80. Anybody got some 3/8 inch plate steel?:) Dang it is good to be feeling better every day. :bounce:

I agree with David sounds like a bearing if not the brakes.

I've got all my parts from cdan for my axle rebuild sitting in the back of the truck. We could put them side by side and then race.

That probably wouldn't be a fair race... I'm sure you'd beat me! By the way, the noise was the brake pads! But I was wrong, it was the back brakes. One side was worn slap out and one of the pads was even gone but the other side had plenty of life left. We got it fixed though. Had to put on autozone pads. They are lifetime though. Wonder how long the life is?
