I was wanting to swap 4.11s from a 62 to go on my 60 so as to avoid tearing it down and messing with the gears. I have found a few rear third members from 62s. am i asking for trouble if I put in two ex-rear third members if i can't find any ex-fronts?

also, is it as simple as unbolting the old, and dropping in the new, or is there more dissassemble required? do i need to get any gaskets or seals before i start?

thanks,
Cameron

It's pretty easy. Fronts are preferable, since they are usually barely used. As long as they never got low on gear oil they are as good as new.. The rears can be tricky if you've never been there before. The c-clip axles take a minute to understand.

If you use rears, one thing I might suggest is to have the one you install in the rear rebuilt. Usually the ring and pinion will be fine but the bearings will be worn out. Have it rebuilt for about $250 and it will be like new. There is a paper gasket between the differential and the axle housing-you will need those. I also coat them with gray or black permatex.

What year is your 60? this makes a difference.

I am probably going to do that when I go SOA. What makes a difference in the year?

I think the rear is easier to take apart then the front because you dont have to pull brakes or anything. C-clips are simple.

You shouldnt run into any problems, other then it is messy. Pretty straight foward procedure. Thank goodness Toyota did the rear ends like they did, just pull the chunks and off you go.

It's a Sept. 85

Yep-then you need FJ62 diffs to get the right flange pattern. If it was Sept 84 or earlier, then '78 diffs wold have the correct fine spline differentials.

Then I'm guessing '86 to '87 works with FJ62 diffs?

Yep.

If you used an earlier model diff, all you would have to do is change the driveshaft yoke to one that matches.

Most difficult is tearing apart the front end. If you've never done it before you are in for a suprise. Do a search on front end rebuild, or check the FAQ. Not hard but time consuming and messy :)
