I am thinking about repainting my 60 while I have it stripped and am considering freeborn red like the 60 my mom drove when I was growing up.

I'm looking for a single stage paint that will sand and buff well. Also since red is usually more prone to fade/oxidation over time, can anyone recommend any paint types/brands that will hold up well? I want this to be the last time i paint this rig, at least for a long time.

the other option is a single stage tan or beige. thanks!
 
I've always had good luck with Dupont products. Just be ready to PAY for the color red - the prices have climbed big-time over the last few years. It was $400+ per gallon for ChromaOne last year when I priced a solid red for another project - then add on for the reducers, etc.

I painted a 68 mustang with "sick-ens" I have no idea how to spell it but that is houw it is pronounced. Porche used it back in the day. It is single stage and last a LONG time...

Super glossy too and easy to shoot.

most single stage paints tend to fade badly after being sanded or buffed. I'm not familiar with any brands that don't do this. in my opinion its well worth the effort to go with a 2-stage paint. Dupont is great paint but don't be afraid to go with a differnt brand, there are alot of good quality urethanes out there, but be prepared to spend some $$$ no matter what brand you choose. If you are not going to spend alot of time on prep or body work & your not all that concerned about the final finish then there are some very durable industrial single stage paints out there that are alot cheaper.
 
Had the same question about painting red.
Before the youngsters came along I bought a Porsche Turbo new in 1988 in Guards Red. Lot of orange in it and I loved the color. Don't know if the paint came from Sikkens but it sure was nice. As much as I liked it the thought of putting it on my FJ40 and then decorating it with a lot of desert pinstriping really, uh, sickens me. But I've got to make up my mind soon because paint time is right around the corner. I hope.

i've been reading up about sikkens and their autocryl single stage looks pretty good. Where can i get the stuff though? I am looking for someone that can mix the code, and send me a couple quarts but I can't seem to find any "dealers".

biege is sounding like a better option if it's any cheaper. a shop quoted me $3000 to paint it even if its completely stripped of the powertrain, all glass, trim and chrome!
 
VTCruiser, that is a heck of a lot of money for a paint job that you have put in the worst part of the work. At least it seems so to me. There is a shop near where I live in SoCal and I asked them about the same kind of deal and for painting my truck would cost me $800, with me supplying the paint. Gonna do it myself with the help of a friend who knows what he's doing, cuz I sure as hell don't.

That would be sikkens. A norwegian company specializing in wood finish products, esp for cedar, log homes, decks etc.
 
I was under the impression that Glasurit was the supplier to Porch....anywho...paint it with some PPG Concept DCC or BASF/Glasurit/RM Diamont and call it good.

This was the information I got back in 1993, times have changed I am sure.

FWIW, I painted a mustang bright RED, caracas red! and it lived ungaraged in the Florida sun for years and it looked great for years! then I sold it :(
