I had this one on hold at Carmax for the past week and decided to pass on it while I wait for VW to buy back the wifes TDI. I did test drive it last friday. There are a few issues with it that they said they were going to fix before the sale. Couple item of concern was some paint overspray on the spare tire. They told me it was just to refurbish the rear bumper. The second being the passenger side mirror was broken. Figure I would pass it along, as this is my favorite color combo!

Came across another one at Carmax the other day. A white one. Obvious overspray on the spare tire. Really sloppy. Made me wonder what they or the previous owner was trying to cover up and what else was hidden. Unfortunate. Carmax told me the same thing...that someone just refinished the bumper cover because there were scratches. I decided to pass on it.

wow.....that is exactly what I am looking for. A 2011 is the last year that will accept full lockers. It has a few miles on it and I won't cringe if I dent or scratch it. My problem is my trade in is worth about $70K. I've never done a trade....DOWN before. I suppose they have a way of doing it so that they walk away with enough profit they are happy. Anyone know anything about such stuff....... Trading down??

Not sure what you mean by the lockers comment, but there are other members here with 2013+ 200s who have installed ARB lockers front and rear including Romer who has a fully built 2014. Also you can easily trade in a car that's worth more than what you're buying. They'll just cut you a check in finance instead of the other way around. I have done that twice in the past and it's no big deal.

Mcgaskins.....thank you so much for telling me that. I'm over 50 and I have been through my share of vehicles but have never known about trading down although I did suspect as much. I have a friend who is a dealer in NY I was about to shoot him an e mail and see how they handle that. Thanks for taking the time. Simplifies my life and lets me get a rig I won't mind beating up a little. I'll just have to be careful and not go drive a new one. LOL

My comment about lockers does not come from personal knowledge. It was only mentioned in a thread and I am glad I misunderstood and got it wrong. Great thread BTW. You may have been following it. Rock Crawler to Overlander

On that page 3 almost at the bottom. It is post no 49 he says

""So some thoughts. I knew I would need to re-gear going into it, and, yea I need to re-gear. 6th gear was absolutely incapable while on the highway until I got to flat Georgia/Florida roads. Not a big deal planned for it.

Crawl control is pretty solid, it definitely is a good system and I'm glad it is offered on these modern Toyota 4x4s. Though I am very glad I decided to save $10k on a '11 over a '13 and just will be going to lockers. While crawl control and multi-terrain select on the newer ones is great, and opens up a whole world to newer off roaders (which isn't that the point, taking people, regardless of their background, to amazing places), it will never be as capable as lockers. So as of now, 4.88s and all new bearings are being cryo frozen and sent back to the best gear guys in the business in my opinion, East Coast Gear Supply. Air Lockers front and rear will be installed also."

I obviously misunderstood what he was talking about which is good to know. I would love to get a 2011 or 13 and get some money back to dump into immediate upgrades. Get it done for my needs and forget about it

Ahh that makes sense I can see how that comment was a little hard to sort through, but yes it's a good thing that 13+ can add lockers because the extra things you get on those models is very worth it IMO.

Also as a side note another benefit of trading down is that you most likely won't have to pay any sales tax on the purchase (depending on where you live of course). In Colorado, you only pay sales tax on the difference of the trade in value and the new purchase, so if the new purchase is less you don't pay tax. I just traded in a Porsche Macan S on my 2014 Land Cruiser, so I only had to pay a couple hundred bucks in tax as opposed to almost $5k which is a huge savings.

Yes I remember when you were deciding on trading your Macan. I bet the 14 is awesome. What extra things do you find in the newer models that really stand out and make it worth it??
I think you are right about the taxes. It is the same here as I recall.

For me having the radar cruise, HID headlights, ventilated seats, slightly updated interior, heated steering wheel, slightly updated exterior and finding one that was young enough to still be under factory warranty made it worthwhile. They all drive pretty much the same, but I found myself looking at the cheapest 08 I could find which were all trashed or the newest I could find which were all pretty expensive but clean. I just happened to get lucky to find a clean 14 with mods still under warranty for a good price! I would not have turned down an older model for a great deal however because like I mentioned they all drive pretty much the same.

anyone have experience with Carmax? I've been keeping an eye out there for a 200 and dont personnely that has purchased car from them

I didn't purchase from them, but I did test drive the 200, discussed financing, and purchasing. It is a low pressure deal, they do not work on commission and they do not negotiate the price (at least that is what they told me). I asked them if they would negotiate since there were problems with the vehicle and they said no, they would repair the items prior to sale, but that is it.

For someone that does not like to have to negotiate, it would be a good place to purchase. I personally like to get a good deal and negotiate that in when I buy.
