The time has come to sell my Turbo Pickup. This truck is my daily driver and I have owned it since 2003. The ONLY reason I am selling it is b/c I am doing a diesel swap in an 3rd gen. extended cab. Im still looking for the extra cab so I'm open to trades for a 3rd gen extra cab pickup only! I'm really only looking for a sr5 model.
I have basically gone thru the entire truck and fixed, replaced, added things as necessary. The easiest way to desribe what I have done is to build a list so hear it goes...
Engine
I bought the truck thinking that it just needed a head gasket. Turns out it had been sitting for quite some time with a blown head gasket and the motor was siezed. So I purchased a wreck 94 with a 22re w/ 60k miles on it. I took the bottom end of this engine and used the turbo head off my truck. This resulted in a engine with a sliglty higher compression than stock. It also seems to have a quite a bit more pep that stock.
I took the turbo head to a machine shop and had them rebuild the head. I then put the engine back together with new
timing chaing w/ steel guide
oil pump
water pump
alternator
spark plugs and wires, dist. cap and rotor from toyota
complete gasket set
all parts came from engnbldr.com
The previous owner had the turbo completely rebuilt right before the headgasket blew. It still looked new when I got it. Everything was tight and the manifold is in good shape also. NO CRACKS like most of the turbo manifolds.
The engine runs good and is pretty fast. I will keep up with a tacoma with 3.4 v6.
Tranny/TCase
These came from the same wrecked truck I got the engine from. They shift perfectly and there are no bearing noises commonly found in higher mileage transmissions. Low and high range 4WD work perfectly and it the tcase shifts in and out easily. The truck has a new heavy duty clutch. I can remember the manufacturer but I believe its centerforce. It also has a new OEM Aisin master and slave cylinder.
Front Axle
I have basically rebuilt everything in the front end except the 3rd member. It has 4.56 gears. NEW:
cv shafts,
timken wheel bearings w/water proof grease
rotors, V6 calipers/pads,
tie rod ends, idler arm, ball joints
Just aligned 1 month ago after installing new front end parts
Rear Axle
New TRD E-locker 3rd member with 4.56 gears. In my opinon...the best option toyota ever offered. These are $1200 new from toyota.
New bearings and seals
New brake shoes and drums
Suspension/Brakes
The suspension is stock with the exception of a set of nice edlebrock shocks. These are the top of the line models that were about $400. It also has a new heavy duty rancho steering stabalizer. The truck drives and handles well.
The truck has new V6 calipers/pad, rotors, drums and shoes. I also upgraded it with a fj80 master cylinder. With the upgraded calipers and master cyl. the truck stops very well and straight with no noises.
Body
When I got the truck it was spray painted zebra/tiger stripped. Some of it was beat up but the cab was in really good shape with no rust. I acquire all the body parts I needed and painted it piece by piece in my shop. Basically everything but the cab came off the frame for paint. The bed on the truck came from out west and had zero rust on it. I sparyed at least 4 coats of primer on everything. Then the base and clear is Sherwin Williams automotive paint. It is a good quality paint. The paint cost over $400. The color is a desert/dune tan.
The cab came out ok...my sprayer messed up on the clear coat and it resulted in orange peel of the clear coat. It doesn't look bad...from 10 ft you can't tell. When your right up on it, it looks a bit textured. I planned on fixing it but I never got around to it.
The bed came out fine. I fixed the sprayer and the clear coat layed down fine. The bed was sprayed with rhino liner on the underside and the inside.
The tailgate was not painted b/c I did not have it when I painted the rest of the truck. I felt the color was close enough and never bothered with it. I do have an extra qt of paint and clear that will go with the truck. Plenty to do the tailgate and touch up anything you would like.
All the body panels are straight except for a dent in the pass. fender. It just happened about a month ago. I have an extra fender that will go with the truck if you feel like fixing it.
Rust
Since painting the truck a 2 yrs ago I have had a few rust spots appear. One is on the seam of the bed and there is another on either side of the tailgate. There is also a couple small rust spots on the inside of the window pillar/door jam. They are nothing major and easily fixable.
Interior
The entire interior was stripped and the cab was rhino lined. I then installed an SR5 interior from a 4runner. Everything is in good shape and funtions properly. The gauge cluster is original mileage is correct. It has a nice pioneer cd player and 4 speakers. A couple pioneer 3 ways in the dash and a couple kenwood 6x9's behind the seat. It has a good quality sound and is loud enough for me.
Overall its a great truck...it not perfect or mint. I built it to use it not take it to the truck show. I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I have.
