I originally posted this on the main TLCA page -- sorry. I did search much of the forum and found scarce mention of the Toyos and Kumhos. . .

Hello all. I am a longtime Tacoma owner, but have recently added a Lexus GX470 to the list. With two small children in tow, our family has started to enjoy driving the sands of Carolina Beach, the Outer Banks, the gravel roads off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and various other dirt roads/fire lanes across NC. The GX is way more than capable, but the OEM Michelin Cross Terrains have about 75K on them. Since 99% of our driving is on pavement, I'd like to stay away from a true AT tire. I am looking hard at:
  • Michelin LTX M/S2
  • Kumho Road Venture APT KL51
  • Toyo Open Country HT
Obviously, the last two are considerably cheaper than the Michelins. Anyone out there with suggestions, experience, or opinions?

Thanks,
Patrick

Here is a list of post that all contain the phrase toyo open country ht. You might try reading through them.

I have run several sets of Michelin LTX on 80 series and they did fine but are expensive. I am currently looking at installing the open country ht on my tundra as its a road and tow rig.

Hope this helps

You should also search the 80 and 100 series threads for tires. There have been many discussions in the past on tire choices.

You might consider the Bridgestone Revo's. I realize you aren't looking for a dedicated A/T type tire, but the Revo's are very quiet, handle well, and best of all, will last for a long time. I've had them on a few different vehicles and I've been quite satisfied by their performance on and off road.

I put a set of the Michelins on my GX last Fall. As I plan to keep my truck for a while, I thought the 72,000 mile rating made sense. They are a little bigger than stock as they weren't available in the stock size. I'm happy with them.

Resolved -- My GX is now wearing Toyo Open Country HTs. . .

Had the Toyo Open Country ATs in 285s... super smooth.

But had to go with the MTs in 265s which required trimming. Wheels are 17x9 and stick out of the fenders by about 1.5".

You definitely feel the tread, but nothing I can't handle. My GX is my commuter, urban bruiser vehicle.
