I have no desire to own a new vehicle. Stumbled across FJs and have become consumed. While mechanically inclined I have very little experience working on cars. Looking for a daily driver to and from work which is only 8 miles. Live in Houston so A/C is a must. Wanting something that is reliable. What do you think something like this would be worth. What concerns should I have if considering purchase?1980 Toyota FJ40 | Streetside Classics - Classic & Exotic Car Consignment Dealer

That's a total restomod and it looks nice. If you're looking for something that's restored with a plethora of options including A/C, power steering, lockers, winch, and more but still retains a somewhat original configuration in terms of engine and drivetrain, take a look here. -> 79 FJ40 RED1

Depends on what your after. Overton has a good variety of fj40’s usually. He has a great rep from what I’ve read as well. Check out the facts page in the Fj40 tech section for more info on what to look out for with a Fj40.

Looks like the rear tub has had some work/mods. That could be a 1/2 aluminum tub with a stock steel tub. Or an all aluminum tub. For $50k I would want an original tub or a properly made steel tub replacement. Also rear seating for that price. Toyota factory colors and look overall help hold value in the long run I think.

I would inspect any paint work, frame mods, tub mods, ect. Never know who built that. A lot of sketchy NON-US 40’s to watch out for too. This one looks to be a US vin I think. Unless I’m blind. Looks nice, but pictures can make the everything look good in the right lighting.

If 50k is in your price range make sure you get what you want. At that price point you should be able to buy any style, mods, ect.

Thanks for the reply. I’m in no hurry really but have the i wants badly. Truth told I would rather have something mint underneath and patina type on the outside. Want to be able to drive it and park without worry of door ding etc. Usually I’m seeing just the opposite with nice cosmetics and work to be done underneath.

Its looks as though this company is bringing in south american cruisers and fixing them up and making them pretty. This is no exception. the aftermarket disk brakes is the first give away for me. I am pretty sure from the add its a fiberglass tub w/steel fenders. It looks nice but its only worth what you are willing to pay for it. Very little on it is from toyota.
