YIKES! Look what he got himself into. This is on a 86 FJ60 rear driver side shock. I would be worried about the condition of the shock but the rust on the crossmember is scary. Any ideas, solutions, would be greatly appreciated by him. He liked my truck so much he bought this on a whim...
suspension rust.webp

The round cross-member can be replaced, so by itself that's not a disaster. However, the frame-rail that it's "attached" to doesn't look too good. I'd recommend a thorough evaluation of the frame. Minor frame rust can be fixed, but if it's extensive...

If your friend is set on keeping this truck then a local welding shop should be able to cut out the bad and weld in a new pipe. If the frame area is bad where the pipe attached a plate could be bolted or welded in place to accept the new pipe. I bet a local guy could do it all for 300$.

hows the body? interior?

id have a hard time putting money into that frame based on the pic, either frame swap or part it out to cut his losses, depending how much he paid.

first time I hear it start so grave and move on to better... I figured we could source a Fab shop locally or a Welding shop and figure out a solution. I also thought maybe we could keep it and get him another one...this one would augment us for parts if the problem was irrepariable. Thanks so far for the input.

By the way, it drives just fine even with this problem. The frame has surface rust but is still beefy. May not be after a good grinding before welding?!?

as far as interior no rips on seats small stains, carpet could be replaced, typical northeastern states rust spots but no major ones other than..., engine dirty but fine, trannie need seals as do diffs. PS works air does not. old crappy radio, good body except small dent/tear at rear left wheel well. very efficient compared to mine actually and great set of Duelers (new) and newer clutch.

That looks exactly how mine looked when I got it, except that was the "attached" side and the other side had completely rusted in two.

talk to me ChuckB, what did you do? Have any pics of the fix by chance?

I called a local fab/welder guy by me and he said that a piece of 1/4 inch steel can be cut to the shape of the frame for 2 ft of length. Then there is no issue for the new pipe to attach. he would do this to both sides and of course weld new shock mounts on the pipe. This would cost approximately 400$ give or take 50$. (more like "take" I'm sure). Hope this helps (I was really curious)

My local mechanic fix that problem on my ex-BJ60 for 100 $. He put a new tub and 2 braquets for the shock. Nice job... and that fix pass the provincial inspection :)

excellent info guys I am going to let you know what we get as an answer here locally. I am feeling good about the responses so it can be a keeper for him. Most of the other work I can do probably. I really need to start welding then I can do a whole lot more.
