Hello. Is posting in two areas allowed? I am a newbie and without going into boring details inside 2 weeks of ownership my trans is slipping - bad. Anyone have a lead on a good used one? I am in CT. Thank you, david

Hi David, I just replaced mine with a used unit. Before you spend a bunch of money either check it yourself or have someone else check the fluid level and condition. When I put my new(used) unit in I freaked out because it wasn't working worth s***! However, following advice of my local "expert" freinds I slowly kept driving and adding fluid until I git the full amount in. Those trannys hold a ridiculous amount of tranny fluid and if it's not compltely full where it should be it will start doing all kinds of weird stuff like slipping and not shifting. Mine now works just fine. If after you've done all that and you come to the conclusion it's time to R&R it you will find rebuilding it will be a shock to your senses! That's why you need to make sure it's really shot before you pull it out. Many here will tell you to replace it with a 5 speed but that's not cheap either. If you need to replace it look for a good used unit with low miles and maybe a "warranty" for a few months. Good luck- you bought a piece of 4X4 history!

Wow, what a great community. Thank you for your fast and considered response. I have mostly done what you stated. I have slowly made certain the level remains. Here is a bit more diagnostic info - truck was idling to warm up and trans cooler line gave out. It was probably leaking since purchase but trans was good. I think the fluid close to drained completely out in my driveway - was probably running 15 minutes with little or no fluid. Since that time the kick down does not work at any speed and the shift from 1st to 2nd hesitates and then catches. Other gears appear fine and it will shift manually pretty well. I am going to change the filter etc this weekend but I do not hold much hope.

When you walked out and discovered what happened was the tranny making any loud noises, squealing, etc. ? Search this forum for "rodney flush". Do exactly what it says and make sure all your coolant lines are not leaking. I'm not a tranny expert so I may be wrong about this but I do know when a water pump loses water and cavitates you will have to "prime" that pump again before it operates properly. Idling in the driveway while all the ATF gets pumped out onto the driveway??? Not sure what gets fried if your not actually trying to operate it through the gears w/o fluid? Good luck.
