Okay, I'm a first time car worker on-er. Yes I've always done my oil, my suspension, my exhaust and bolt on stuff like that for my FJC.

I've already bothered Jimmy enough so I thought since these are pretty basic questions, I'd post here. My concern is not being prepared. The issues I'd like to address are as follows:

1. T-case leaking
2. Oil pan gasket replacement
3. Rear diff leaking where DS goes in
4. Whatever else should be done while I'm learning...errr...fixing those.

First off, do I need/want to get this up on jack stands or is flat ground/ramps good enough? If I stand it on jacks, frame or axle? Do I go for a full set of seals (Tranny, T-case, knuckles, axle, oil pan, diff) since I have it up? Oh, and is it OK to remove the tranny/t-case combo without supporting the engine seperately?

I'm currently cleaning the underside to see if I can pinpoint these leaks. I thought it was just going to be an oil pan leak but it looks like I'm in deeper. Oh well, I always wanted to learn. FSM's are on the way from SOR so I'll be pouring over those next week sometime. I would just like to get some supplies together so I'm not out chasing tools and such instead of working on it.

The oil pan will be a PITA on top of the IFS. Are you sure its an oil pan? Are you sure the t-case is leaking? or is the motor leak blowing back? If the t-case is leaking I suggest dropping the t-case and supporting the trans. The t-case should be just a series of layers, and is pretty easy to pull apart on a bench. Just use RTV on the t-case and oil pan. If you drop the t-case, the trans/motor will want to rotate toward the back of the vehicle until the motor hits the fire wall. If you drop the trans im betting the motor will want to rotate forward....but maybe still backwards. If you do end up dropping the trans, consider unbolting the motor and hoisting it up as much as hoses and wires allow to make the oil pan easier

All of this can be done in the ground you dont "need" to raise the truck. (maybe to drag the trans out from under the truck)

The pinion seal is easy. drop the drive shaft, pop off the 30mm stake nut, slide the pinion flange off, pull out the old seal and carefully tap in the new one...

Sorry, I should have made it more clear that this is in regards to the 60, not the FJC. I spent a bit of time trying to figure out what the IFS on my 60 was. I'd be spitting nails if it was the FJC.

That said, thanks for the advice with regards to not having to jack it up. I'll wait to get the manuals before asking more questions.

**edit**

In researching pinion seal replacement, I discovered what the leaky thing is on the pass side of the motor. Apparently, the Oil Cooler may be a bit leaky too. I need a manual. Looks like there is a clamp missing on that hose. Like I said, I'm all new to actually working on a car. Usually, by the time they give me trouble, I'm up for a trade in. DAMN YOU TOYOTA FOR GETTING ME ADDICTED!!!

Oh in that case....embrase the leakiness.

And everything gets easier and simpler on the 60, but everything is much bigger and heavier.

Yeah man, it's like an old Harley, just marking it's territory.:hillbilly:

The key is to learn which leaks are mission critical and which ones you just keep adding fluid to...

Yup, I call it my suspension, frame, floor, lubrication/corrosion resistance system.

But he is a self admitted newbie....let him spin his wheels a bit. :grinpimp:

I used some of the Gojo engine stuff...worked rather well. I can see the t-case at least. It appears to mainly be leaking from the very bottom bolt. I'll tighten. The rest of it might be running underneath from either the oil pan seal/oil cooler and the tranny. Think I'll take all the skids off and get a better look later. I definitely see hose replacement in my future as well as some major undercarriage cleaning. BTW, I hate Ziebart.

In the rear, it looks like its not so much the pinion seal, which is faulty, but the main..uh...differential seal that is leaking. Guess that if that's the case, I'm doing the axle?

FWIW, I want to park it in the garage for the winter and really don't want it leaking. I'm no clean freak but I hate oil stains on my floor and driveway.

What take Ziebart off?

Just came home from picking up FIPG for the impending grease fest. I saw a white 80 zip by on Shelbyville road. I didn't catch it in time to discern but it had mudders on it...I heard that.

If it was between springfield and shelbyville it might have been Homers Canyonaro

Tarp.

If anyone is interested, I'm going to be drinking in the driveway later to watch the fireworks. I live directly across from the park where they light them off for Wanamakers "Old Settlers Day". I promise no wrenches will excape my toolboxes. Great seats still available.

Ok, day three with a bottle jack pushing on the oil pan. I believe that all the bolts are out. There aren't any on the saddles are there? Assuming there are not, tonight I guess I'm going to get a sturdier board to spread the pressure and crank a little harder. I'm actually excited to get this done since pulling the drain plug told me that the pan needs to be cleaned out anyway.

Think I'll get at that pinion seal as well while I'm under her.
