I've created the handout materials for the newbie class using the information we used last time, including Henry C's excellent primer on expeditions. Also Butch has offered up use of the Baker farm for the location. I like using the farm because it's a little closer than the other places we were discussing, it's private, and it's free. :D We can also camp out there if anyone would like.

Thoughts on using the Baker farm? For those of you unfamiliar, it's roughly 20 minutes north of Bonham.

Next we need to come up with a date. The last weekend in June (29-7/1) is Kowboy's white trash gathering there so that weekend is out. July 15 weekend is the Clayton trip. We're already getting to the point where it'll be too hot to camp.

Suggestions?

sometime in october? early? just thinking if we do it when it's hot, it'll be miserable, and folks might be inclined to get somewhat out of sorts.
plus if we do it in october, it should be cool enough to camp again.
late october is out for me, as i'm usually in moab right around then. however, if we do multiples of these, then maybe we do a second one in late february, which will also give us the chance to catch more folks that wish to attend.
what say those who would wish to attend?

I'm all booked up on my weekends until August, and even then I'm going to be out of town for the last two weekends of August. After that it's September. I could do something in September.

yes! the Baker farm would be a great place. I actually thought about that when we first started talking about these classes. Butch had a campout there a few years ago in conjunction with a blessiing of the grapes at a local vineyard. I think it was in September.

Justin, I hear you loud and clear. I don't like camping in the middle of summer either. that is why I won't be going to Clayton in July. I camp more than anyone I know, but I don't camp June July and August.

Butch has got a great place to camp out there. we probably should wait till after August. I know September can be just as hot as August. But I can't do it the last week of September or the first two weeks of October because I will be driving up to Utah to do the Maze with some other Land Cruisers. I realize that whatever date you choose, some people are going to have a scheduling conflict. so don't worry about me. I am just glad that this is going to take off. this is going to be good for the club.

I am not opposed to the ranch but I would like us to do it somewhere that offers activities for all levels. that way the newbies can ride shotgun on other trails or test their new skills. It also might entice more club members to attend.

Fall works great for me. I just wanted to make sure we didn't want to do one sooner. As far as mulitple classes go, maybe we should get throught the first one first. :D We'll see what kind of response we get.

We could do another class and a ride-along at ICBM too.

I would like to join you guys at an event and really see what my stock 1992 fj80 is all about. I would hope that any type of gathering would be within a few hours of Downtown Houston.

I am up for a newbie class.. just tell me more that 3 weeks ahead of time so I can schedule the time off.
Thanks
