Needed new tires so opted for new wheels as well.

Very nice - I like the look!

Looks like Nitto Ridge Grapplers? I am not sure of the tire sizes for an 18 inch wheel, but I assume those work out to a metric 35 inch diameter?

I like the wheels - what kind are those and where did you get them?

Hey Evan,

Yes, the tires are Ridge Grapplers - 285/70-18. With the 18" rim, the total tire diameter comes in at 33.8". That is 1" smaller than the replacement tires, Toyo Open Country, which were 285/75-18.

The wheels are Fuel Shoks. I purchased them based on a catalog/photo. I was looking for a lighter tone (not black) but these were darker than the photo. However, I have grown to like the look and are very pleased with the set up. The primary driver for new wheels was to eliminate the spacers required when using the factory wheels. Objective achieved.

I still get some rubbing during full articulation with the 34", but significantly less than observed with the larger tires. I really liked the 35" tires and you were one of my inspirations, after following you during a past Cruise Moab. I just struggled with all the rubbing, excessive tire gouging and fender deformation issues. Also the larger tire really taxed the gears and fuel economy. Don't get me wrong, I already noticed the difference with just this 1 inch difference. But that is okay as well, since I have toned down my "yeah, let me see if I can do that....." frame of mind. So this adjustment is more in balance for me.

I don't recall ever meeting or reading any 200 series owner being able to adopt the 35" tire without these issues. Without exception, they all warned of undesirable down-sides to those who attempted the larger tire. Walt suggested that there would not be a rub with his stage 2 mods (total chaos tundra U/L control arms), but that proved inaccurate. I would have stayed with the 35s if there were fender flares available, like Walt puts on his Taco mods, but those flares are not commercialized as far as I can tell for my 2016+ series.

This will be my 3rd set of tires since I started this hobby and each of them have performed impressively. i really think tires that have a good, solid brand all appear to be pretty good for the requirements that I have.

Ok, thanks for explaining the changes. That all makes good sense. Even on the solid axle 80’s, the jump from 33’s to 35’s is a big one in terms of lift, regearing, etc. The extra clearance on the trail is nice, but it comes at a pretty big price tag.

I think you will be very happy with this new wheel and tire combination.
