Just picked up this winch on CL for $75. It doesn't run, but I planned on rebuilding what ever I found anyway. Looks like a 8274, but it does not have a ID plate on it can someone confirm? Is there any other way of finding the year, serial etc? The motor has a badge on it that says N 15877, M MRV-B-4, S 068. 12V. It also looks like it's missing a support on the one side of the spool, anyone know a good source for that part? I cant wait to go get stuck!

Thanks

that's an 8274. The flat part in pic 2 on the alum case should have the model serial and date code of mfg stamped on it.

parts can be had through warn or any reseller of warn products
Warn Industries - Replacement Parts

rebuild it and it looks like a good deal

Agree that it's a find...

But also that part is missing. Should be easy to come by. Might want to look into doing something about those solenoids, too.

They do look pretty rusty!

Just called Lordco and they carry all the parts I will need, including rebuild kits.

Just talked to Warn, the winch body had JS8 stamped on it, the guy there says that means it was built in June on a Sunday in 1988. He also said winches made in the 70's had a metal cover where the controller hooks up, and the 80's and later had a rubber cover.

That is a Warn 8274 model 8403 . An earlier version of the 8274--50.

Nice Find!

I have one that was made in Kent, Washington with the metal cover covering the plug.

I cleaned her all up yesterday and everything seemed to be in good working order, however the motor looked like it sat half full of water for some time.

The motor was a 12v, I planned on running it of my 24v bj74 after reading some of the reviews of how strong and fast it was. So now I am looking at replacing the motor and am torn between buying a cheap 12v or shelling out the clams for a 24v. The second option seems far less appealing to me.

Does anyone have a good source for cheap 12v motors in BC?

Check to see if there is an alt or ele motor rebuilder close by. They can clean it up and rewind it if necessary

Nice! It has a splined motor. I was talking to a motor winder yesterday about converting my 8274 12V Prestolite motor to 24v. But it is not going to happen because (cant find 24v field coils and armature)

When I asked him about running the 12V winch with 24v solenoids with one of my 24V Landcruisers he said , `` Maybe 6 or 7 times a year it is possible, but dont let it get too hot!`

Picked up a new 24v motor from Brighouse Auto Electric in Richmond. The guys were very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They had an old one in the back that was getting rebuilt, with drain and fill plugs and a tapped brake shaft to get rid of the snap ring. The motor is a Prestolite, it has wiring for a thermal cut off if things get too hot. $210, they replaced all the nuts with stainless. The guy there said he has tons of 24 and 12v motors and solenoids in stock.

Thanks for posting . Exellent information:cheers:

I should also mention the motor came with a spacer behind the bearing that needs to be removed to fit the 8274 properly. I think it was there for diffident winch models.

I put put the final touches on the winch set up. Solenoid is a Albright knock off with wireless remote. The new solenoid location is temporary, one day I will mount it under the hood.

Custom in-cab controls mounted on the dash, on/off, in/out, the red button is a glow timer override for cold mornings.

FYI for kicks, I tried running the old 12v solinoids with the 24v motor and they lasted one very weak pull.
