I just put a block heater in mine too. I've been running it off of a outdoor light timer, that way it's only heating for 3-4hrs. I made the past mistake with my Toyota p/u of plugging it in before bed, and then waking up and speeding off....only to not realize that the coolant got too hot and puked out the overflow.....

You can get Wemo wifi controlled plug that will work off your smart phone. Can be scheduled on/off.

Starting, when things get cold out glow it 3-4 times and let the motor warm up to build up pressure for the oil to circulate.
Towing : totally fine to tow a trailer with your bicycle and lunch pail, nothing more !
Turbo is a good option along with comp test !
These motors get very high milage with very little maintenance !
Best engine heater is a Webasto, runs off the fuel system and operates by a timer and remote.
