I have the stock tires on my FJC-what is the biggest I can go without a lift?

I think 33s are the largest you can go without modifying anything. Do a search on this site and on the fjcruiserforums.com. Plenty of tire info between the two. I have the TRD 16" wheels with the BFG ATs. They have worked really well for 90% of what I drive on. For the few times I go to Badlands, I would like a set of BFG MTs. I just can't justify them at this time. The AT's are 32", and they tend to cake with mud. Do some research and see what others have done. :)

I have only driven the Trail Team FJC once. I loved it. With Woodys' guidance I was putting it places I never thought it would/should go. I have also wheeled at Badlands a couple times when Dbl Blk was there, and his rig went every where the rest of the pack went. Come out to TFT and really get impressed with your rig. Thats just my 2% of a dollars worth.:D

Be VERY CAREFUL when considering a lift for this vehicle. Many people have done a lift and lots more are willing to sell you a lift kit. BUT, many of the FJs are cracking at the top rear of the front wheel wells. So far the common thread in all of these failures seems to be a lift kit. Otherwise, the rigs have been great!

Glad to hear you finally broke in the FJ. Looking forward to seeing another FJ at Toys for Tots!:)

Hold on a minute! You're spreading an unsubstantiated rumor! Lift kits have not been proven to cause the bulge/crack/rip issue!!! There are several lifted FJC's that do not have this problem! The common cause is pointing in the direction of the manufacture of the inner fender well prior to a specific build date!!!! There are tons of stock FJC's running around with bulges and tons of lifted that are not! It looks as though FJC's made prior to Nov/ Dec 2006 have this issue! I'm not aware of too many made after that date that have this issue!! Mine is an April 06 build and has had a bulge even before I even thought of lifting it!! You can go over to the "Blue Room" for all the gory details or find LandCruiserSteve on here and get the info from him!! He's very involved with Toyota with this issue! Get informed!
If we dont get a lift kit because of the possible cracking then how do you handle the trails? When I was at the badlands there was a part of a trail that was rutted (high in the middle) and I didnt think I could get through without s****ping the s!@t out of the bottom so I turned around and went back. Is this something FJC should just avoid?
Mods are pretty much user specific! Do not be afraid to get a lift! Just be sure to get one that is from a reputable manufacturer! I went with a Toytech and love it! Some folks love their OME's! Some All-Pro's! Lifts on an FJC are a good thing! You can clear a lot more obstacles with them! A definite mod is a good skid plate!! The factory "bling" is useless! I can show you pics of mine that will curl your hair. The other mod you might want to do is a good solid set of rear lower control arms! My stockers are bowed! I will hopefully have a new set before I go to the Badlands!

Phil,

My apologies. I haven't read the thread in the blue room since mid October. At that time it was looking like the lifts. I am VERY glad that this is proving to be false. What a shame it would have been if this were the case. Thank you for clarifying.

I am also a new owner of a 2007 FJ Cruiser, no mods, all stock, roof rack, black steel wheels, front skid plate, factory Dunlap tires 4x4 w/AT rear diff lock. I also would like to start doing some trail riding but have no experience. I have had her in the mud a couple of times in some empty fields but nothing that I needed 4 wheel for. I a, planning on going to the December TFT out at Badlands. I have filed out my app for the Hoosier Cruisers. It is still planned for the 1st of December (next Saturday) right?

Thanks for any info, and I would like to follow a experienced driver in an FJ Cruiser to know what I can and can't do. I also don't want to tear the rig up on the body (ie I don't want to slide into trees or other objects that would damage the body, the wife would skin me alive). We have been married 14 years and I think in Indiana she can legally kill me at this point and not get in trouble... :-)

Not a problem! I wasn't trying to rip on you, just wanted to get the right info out there! There are a couple of other forums that are highly misinformed on this issue. (One even suggests that its due to a weak frame and you shouldn't even drive it!) Toyota has been fixing the bulge/rips as a warranty issue. It seems they realize there is a defect but just won't come out and say it.

The very first mod for an FJC, IMO is tires!!! The stockers are pretty much useless in mud. There is a tire thread going on in the FJ Cruiser section of the forum. Check it out and see what you like.

Just remember, once you start modding you can't stop.

Don't worry Robert, we don't want to tear our rigs up either. Badlands offers something for all comfort levels and we know our way around. If the conditions are too much for you, you can always park and ride along for a section. Hope to see you there.

fatback,

I didn't want to tear up my rig either. I got a little crazy the first time out and did some body damage. I cried (did I just say that out loud?). Anyway, as Clint said in the post above this one, the group knows the trails and they will recommend ways to get around if you don't want to risk damage. Gappy went out in his restored 60(?) and managed to keep everything in place the first time out. But then he got bit by the mod bug and has never been the same since.

I hope to see you out there!

Thanks for everyones support, I am looking forward to Saturday's TFT run. I am hoping that my wife will come along, I want her to be bit by the 4wheeling bug, I want to take a cross country trip next year and hit some great spots. I really want to see the Continental Divide from behind the wheel of my FJC!
:)

This will be great. I can't wait to see all the new FJC's. Clint, you bringin yours? See ya all Saturday.

Sandbox,
I live in the Cumberland area, maybe we could meet up some time and talk, maybe grab a beer  or something. I am new to 4 wheeling as well, and want to get some time on the trails. I would like to go to the Badlands or maybe RedBird in two weeks on Saturday. Would you be willing to join me? Nothing is set in stone yet but that would be my first weekend off, I work at a local hospital and work every other weekend, and this is my weekend, sucks.

See you around,
Robert

fatback,

I might be interested in joining you if that's okay. If you are open to it, we may start a new thread and see if we can get an informal run going. Are you talking about Dec. 15?

Double Black Diamond aka "S"

P.S. Sorry, I just found the other thread! :)

That sounds great, do you know if they will be open, I ask because it is winter after all. If they are closed what would be other options? Interlake, Badlands?

Robert
