Hi Everyone,

I have been a long time fan of Land Cruisers and finally became a proud owner of a 2003 Land Cruiser. This beauty has 220,000 miles and has been California owned all of it's life with only 2 owners. The car is on overall solid condition. Had to chance to take it out on easy to moderate rated trails and it performed exceptionally, even with street tires.

I have looked through the forums quite a bit and have a few things I want to get done to baseline. While Carfax showed quite a bit of maintenance, I wasn't able to get detailed records from the owner. I had it inspected by one of the recommended shops on the forum which also uncovered some work that needs to be done.

I don't have any major plans to mod the car besides bigger tires as I don't plan to rock crawl or do any crazy off road trails. Still plan to get some skid plates (maybe Asfir) and maybe rock sliders to be on the safe side. Let me know if there is anything I miss below that would recommended to address. Coolant hoses and heater tees look good which is why I'm not concerned with them.

Done:
Oil Change with Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5W30, OEM filter and OEM drain plug washer

To Do:
  • Coolant flush
  • Transmission drain and fill. Current fluid is red and looks to have been done at some point. I'll most likely do a few drain and fills with 2-3 quarts with OEM ATF Type T-IV.
  • Front diff, rear diff, and transfer case oil. From my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, the differentials and transfer case are good with 75W-90 gear oil. Was planning to go with AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® 75W-90 100% Synthetic Gear Lube. I also considered Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90, but I'm honestly not sure if it's the right one. I plan to double check for the LSD sticker but seems like 2000 and up LC's did not have LSD's.
  • Brake pads and brake fluid flush. I have OEM pads and fluid.
  • I have steering rack leak which I'll likely have the shop take care of. They recommended doing the tie rods while I'm getting the rack and pinion changed. Will go OEM unless there are aftermarket ones that are better that is reccomended here.
  • New 33 inch AT Tires, probably Falken AT4W or BF Goodrich KO3. Don't plan on lifting the car so that's the biggest I'll go. I'll likely get a set of OEM 16 inch wheels to replace the aftermarket ones that came with the car.
  • Minor leak/seepage at the flywheel inspection cover. Shop said it's either the rear main seal or upper oil pan gasket. It's minor enough where they recommended to just wait until it gets worse which it may not (fingers crossed). Front main seal minor leak/seepage too, also recommended to wait. Was told this can be addressed with the next timing belt/water pump service (Was last done at 187k so a little while to go).

Land Cruisers did not come with limited slip diffs, but most high quality gear oil comes with the friction modifier, anyway. Valvoline comes in bags, which is pretty darn convenient.

I’m a big fan of Wildpeaks.

The front inspection cover seams to collect oil from anything leaking on the engine. If it’s dry on the inside, then your rear main seal is not the culprit. Rear main leaks are very rare.

Got it, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll give the Valvoline a try, it looks more readily available than the amsoil. Do you use it for the diffs and transfer case? I'm assuming it's the Valvoline Flex Fill 75W-90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil right?

Yes, both. I also add AT-205 when I first get a truck. It adds plasticizer back into the seals, keeping them flexible.

Welcome, sounds like you have a good start on maintenance !
