Hi,

My name is jesse and I just bought a blue 1990 fj62 this weekend. Its my first LC, actually only the second one that I've ever been in, and I love it. But I had a few questions, most of which will come later. The truck has 100K since the shocks were last replaced and I'd like to give it a new feel. I drove it some three hundred miles this weekend, and it really bounces around a lot. From reading some of the old threads it seems like the OEM toyota shocks are the way to go (if you dont want to spend crazy money and arent getting ready for any lift). My question to you all is: how do you find this shocks or "around $80 a set"? I called the local toyota dealer and they quoted me $65 each. Ithink for that price I could get a nicer rancho shock. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

jesse

Call Cruiser Dan at American Toyota (search in Parts/vendors, you'll find his contact info).

About a year ago, they were around 85 bucks (all four) shipped to my door from him. He offers amazing discounts on OEM parts to LC enthusiasts and he'll be your new best friend.

Those Toyota shocks are great, btw. You'll like 'em.

Jesse,
I do have the Tokico shocks which are the stock Toyota shocks that are sitting in my garage since I added a lift. Have about 15k miles on them. Would look for about $40 for them plus shipping. They are great shocks for the money.

PM if interested.

Thanks,
Mark

thanks mark and jason for the quick info. mark, I bet I'd take you up on your offer later on in the game, but right now I 'm so excited to have the rig that I 'm willing to spend the extra $40 or so to start with new parts. Wait untill I'm broke and the truck is not running and you'll see me down at the junkyard trying to coble together anything cheap that'll get me back on the road.

Good luck! Hope the shock replacement helps (often the much-pricier leaf spring replacement is in order, but do this step first... it might be all you need and it's CHEAP). If you're calling Dan, you might consider getting some new OEM filters (air, oil, fuel) from him if you don't know when stuff was last changed on it. Always good to start off when fresh fluids and filters...

I just bought Old Man Emu shocks all round from cruiseroutfitters.com. The shocks were about $72 and the stablizer a little less. I was able to put the OME shocks on that go with the Dakkar springs. Right now I have stock springs but will eventually go with a mild lift. Have had no problem with shock travel range during my daily driving which does involve some mild off road. If you plan on raising her up a little, you might want to buy shocks once.

Thanks for the good advice everybody. Yeah, when I make the order for the springs I was thinking about getting a few oil filters, air etc. Just to start off fresh. The truck has a whine that I think is coming from the rear axle (only on load dissapears when throttle is eased off) so I just bought a few quarts of redline 80/140 differential oil and I'll see if this quites it down. As you all said, if you dont know when it was last changed.. better start off fresh. The truck was a one owner vehicle but I can't find any record of the transfer case or diff fluids being changed, so I thought I'd start with new fluid and see where that takes me.

I bought a set of OEM shocks from th elocal Toyota dealer about 2 years sgo for like $29 each. Try another dealer. Join TLCA and find a dealer who will honor their docount...

Or just call C Dan.

seems that all agree that the stock Toyota shocks are great value; anyone care to comment on Bilsteins for the unmodified fj60?; there is a local exowner who is selling a set but they are pricey :(

LOu,
GO with the stock set-up. Bilsteins are good for on-road, but suck offroad and arent worth the $ from what I can tell. Unless you get the high $ ones made for offroad.
