Hi Everyone
Just purchased a 77 FJ40 bought out Tuscon AZ just got it delivered yesterday. Looks great but Engine running a little rough any recommendation on a good Cruiser mechanic locally.

Welcome! Most guys and gals here do most of their own work. I'm not too familiar with any mechanics as I have only been here a short time myself. Wimberley is expensive and Austin is a good drive to see Edwin. However we do have wrench days where we get together and help each other work on rigs. It has been quite sometime since the last one so I guess that means we need to organize one soon. Anyways welcome and hope to meet ya at the next meeting friend!

Meetings are the 1st Saturday of the month at Panera bread at 1604 and blanco on the northwest side.

Welcome,

really need more info on the rig tho, stock? 2F? mileage? any mods to motor? carb? Start with the basics such as tune up, fuel filter etc. A good tune up usually fixes alot of these issues...

Congrats on your new ride.

Coming from AZ, it shouldn't have the usual 40 rust issues. You may not need a mechanic. Do a basic tuneup in your driveway, then run Seafoam through a vacuum line and add to your gas tank. Those steps will often cure rough running issues. If not, come back and ask for additional suggestions.

Sea Foam, the silver bullet....

To clean carbon and varnish deposits from the tops of cylinders and the backs of intake valves, add 1 oz. Sea Foam® to each gallon of fuel. Sea Foam® will slowly re-liquefy the varnish and gum deposits that hold carbon together.
To remove carbon and varnish deposits more quickly, Sea Foam® can be induced directly into the combustion chamber via the following method. With the engine warmed up and running, SLOWLY POUR 1/3 to ½ can of Sea Foam® down the carburetor throat or into any main manifold vacuum line that DISTRIBUTES EVENLY TO ALL CYLINDERS.

Once the product has been applied, turn off the engine and allow the Sea Foam® to heat soak for a minimum of 10 minutes. At this time, Sea Foam® will dissolve the varnish deposits that hold carbon together. After allowing the Sea Foam® to soak, restart the engine in a WELL VENTILATED AREA as exhaust will be extreme for a short time. Drive aggressively for 2 to 5 miles to allow all the atomized carbon to be safely expelled from the system. REPEAT Sea Foam® TREATMENT AS NECESSARY.

Atomized carbon? How does it atomize carbon? Isn't carbon already an atom? So sea foam breaks down the compounded carbon... Interesting. I'm gonna have to give that a shot

Correct on both counts (shifting into my former life as a biochemist). Carbon is an element, and is atomic in it's most basic form. Remember carbon bonding from your organic chemistry? It aggregates into carbonized deposits when hydrocarbons combust. Sea Foam breaks down those deposits into smaller units, commonly known as atomizing. As a long time car geek, I'm surprised you haven't heard of Sea Foam. It's one of the very few additives that actually work as advertised. Search the 40 forum and you'll get a number of hits.

BTW, to the OP, you probably should replace all your vacuum lines along with a tuneup. Even a small vacuum leak can make your engine run like crap.

Lol i knew what was meant from the get go, just enjoy some good organic chemistry discussions. I have heard of sea foam and have used it before with my boat motor. However never used it on a vehicle and in all honesty never have thought to use it. I'm sure my 2F will need some carbon atomized when I crank her up after a year of sitting silent.

Definitely agree it's good to change the lines. Ive changed all my lines on the 2F except for the radiator hoses but planning on doing that soon.

The fix entails dropping your transmission in order to access the seal. Best solution for a leaky rear main seal is to ignore it, until you need a new clutch. Then pay someone.

Did you get rid of the rough idle?

OK well I may do that as for the rough idle my neighbor is a pretty good mechanic he actually rebuilt the Distributor put new wires and coil replaced all the hoses.

In San Antonio, I recommend two places. The first is The Dealer Alternative on Bitters Rd. Outstanding work, reasonable prices and very fair. The other place is Orient Auto on Warfield (near airport). They know Toyotas too.

Drop by and see us at our next get together.

Thanks Brett actually I am familiar with the Dealer Alternative they work on my wife's Lexus, they are great to deal with.Never heard of the other Garage I will have to check it out. Hope to meet you as well.
