Hi folks,
I'm taking delivery next month of this beast:
It's a JDM 1999 VX with the 1HDFTE
I live in Australia and its pretty hard to find anything with less than 200 thousand kilometres that hasn't hauled a caravan around the country or done any decent 4wding so i decided to import one.
Has around 190 thousand kilometres and looks to have some suspension fruit, Bilsteins and some random control arms/panhard.
I'm really keen to replace the factory JDM Screen/Navigation and have seen the Tesla units and the huge thread on here, I couldn't see anyone with a RHD JDM Model that had done the conversion, so reach out if you have!
Cheers!

Welcome! That is super clean looking.

Welcome! I have a JDM UZJ, same year, factory nav, and discovered that the nav/audio connections on the JDM ones are different when I bought a BT adapter for a US model and discovered the plugs aren’t the same, despite the nav units looking like mirror images….so I think the Tesla screen conversion might run aground on the same rocks.
I’m beginning to suspect I need to use google translate to do searches in Japanese—seems like there are probably BT adapters and maybe even Tesla-style kits for JDM 100s, but we just need to unlock the mysteries of the Japanese department of the internet…

Im leaning towards doing the 3 dial conversion from an Aus delivered 100 series then just going with a double DIN Android auto head unit. Car is finally in Australia so should be taking delivery in the next two weeks

Please let me know how that goes—do you happen to know if that’s easier than converting a US model from nav to non-nav? (Which appears to be a major undertaking)

If it’s a plug-n-play conversion I’d love to do the same—I just ordered a JDM CD magazine to replace the missing one and get some music in my life…it sounded awesome for about one disc, then I put 6 in it and now it’s both stuck and won’t play, so I’m back at square one, but missing six CDs😂

I have no idea and I hate the thought of doing any wiring but I think because we'll no doubt have this car for a very long time I'd really like to make it a nice place to be for long distance trips and Android Auto helps so much with that. From what I can see the Aus delivered manual 3 knob style controls have the same rear plugs as what is shown in the big nav delete thread on here so I hope it goes ok! Im considering paying an auto electrician to do it also. WIll keep you posted.

The weird thing is that my 99 JDM with nav does NOT have the same plugs as the US models with nav, which might spell trouble for your conversion.
But I like your automotive electrician idea…I’m pretty good with simple 12v stuff but fairly awful with wiring diagrams…

I'll happily do away with the navigation as i'll put an Android auto headunit in for nav. From what I can see going off current ebay listings of the 3 dial unit they look very similar to what is in the big conversion thread on these forums...

Im sort of in the same boat mate, in NZ with an LX but factory nav. Which is beyond terrible as far as support goes down here. I'm just kicking off with a Bluetooth FM transmitter. Will see how we get on with that. I had a 90 series before and just ripped out the head unit and replaced with an Android auto/ car play Sony unit. Easy peasey :)

Yeah, I'd happily can the nav, as the disc doesn't have US map features, screen is broken, interface is 25 years old, etc. But I cannot live without the climate control. (well, I suppose I can, but it would kind of suck) Looking forward to seeing what you find out as you try to convert to 3-knob. I wonder if the AUS -spec LC's had the same NAV harness as the US spec models. . .
Did some searching in Japanese yesterday, and it looks like the only BT adapter sold in Japan for 100 series was . . . the US-made Vais Soudlink which doesn't work in pre-2003 US models (we have one in our '04 US model). Looks like maybe there was never enough demand in Japan to get anyone to make an adapter domestically, so I may be out of luck with this approach.
Might try an FM adapter, but with the frequency differences, that's a whole thing (frequency offset adapter needed or technically-illegal-in-the-US Japanese-spectrum FM adapter are the only approaches that'd work) .
I'm about to buy a cassette adapter with a 3.5mm audio input and just get an adapter from iphone to that and see how that sounds while I ponder more elegant solutions.
At any rate, keep us posted!!
