Hey Everyone!

Been creeping on here for a little while now, but since I finally got my own Land Cruiser, I decided to join!

I picked up a 2003 LC a few weeks ago in San Jose. The truck has 196k miles, one owner, a clean California title, and has been well maintained with regular oil changes. In the last 15k, it has had the timing belt and water pump done, CV boots replaced, spark plugs replaced, transmission and cooling system flushed, front and rear diff serviced, transfer case serviced, airbag sensor assembly replaced, and the battery replaced. Also, new front and rear pads were put on 1k miles ago. The tires were shot though, so I just put on a set of 275/65/18 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s.

This is my first truck. I've always been a car nerd (big BMW fan), but I'm also pretty active and have needed something more rugged to keep up with camping, exploring, going to the snow, etc. Plus, overlanding seems awesome and I would love to eventually build a rig.

A couple of minor issues: the front speakers are blown and sound pretty bad, and the passenger door power lock no longer works. Also, on the truck's first trip out of town, the check engine, vsc trac, and vsc off lights all lit up. Now, the lights intermittently pop up and then clear themselves. Its throwing the code C1340 (Open Circuit in Center Diff Lock Signal), but I haven't had time to investigate further.

Other than that, the truck has been rock solid! In last few weeks since I bought it, the truck has done some mild off roading, driven through a snow storm, turned into a camper for two nights, and hauled 5 friends and all of our gear on two weekend trips. I love driving it, and I'm excited to start working on it, adventuring in it, and learning more about my truck with the help from everyone on here!

Well done looks like a clean car enjoy.I just did my brakes and as I was pumping the pedal my vsc off and vsc track and a chime come on and hasn't did it again. Is the vsc off suppose to work in emergencies only and light up vsc off when starting the car and then dissappear.

Thanks for the info! The lights do stay on while i'm driving, not just at start up. I just cleared the codes again. We'll see what pops back up. I was thinking that maybe there's a loose connection somewhere since it seems to happen intermittently?

Check your abs sensors at each wheel. I had the same problem and it was cleared by replacing the abs sensor on passenger side front.

Given the code that was thrown (and the lights that are on) it definitely is an issue with your center differential/transfer case. No issues when driving, right? Tires don't chirp when you are making hard turns?

It sounds like the sender wire for the signal has a loose connection coming out of the center diff/t-case or along the line to the ECU. The reason why it is giving you the VSC TRAC/VSC OFF lights is because when the center diff is engaged (the button on the center console that has the front two tires turned and with an X in the middle of the drivetrain), it disables those two systems as they simply wouldn't work with the center diff locked (or if they did they would just cause more issues). In response, the car has fail-safed to disabling the systems, as it does not know if the center diff is locked or not.

If it's happening intermittently, try to engage/disengage the center diff and see if it does anything. Another orange light on the dash should light up if it's reading the sender properly (which it isn't).

Thanks, that makes perfect sense

The diff lock light (drive train with X) does appear when I lock the diff, and it locks/unlocks fine in both 4H and 4L. No issues with wheel hopping or chirping in tight turns. The lights haven't come back on since i cleared the codes. An issue with the sender wire definitely sounds like the best guess. Any recommendations on how to diagnose where it is, besides just checking the connection points?
