Hello everyone,

I bought a 100 series 4.2 diesel about 3 years ago. I have been lurking on the forum ever since i purchased the vehicle. I have 33 inch BFgoodrich all terrain tires and I use the vehicle mainly for towing a caravan (1250kg, 2750 lbs).

Car currently has 380k km (236k miles), originally purchased at 350k km (217k miles).

I am looking to do the timing belt and the valves soon along with a EGR delete (ordered the non egr part) along with water injection. I am not fully happy with the perofrmance of the car, it can struggle a bit while climbing a mountain, i.e i cannot accelearate past 40k kms (30 miles) per hour. I think that the intake may be clogged.

What else should I have done once they are working on the engine? Major maintenance items that should not be skipped. Have the injectors cleaned (should i get bigger injectors?). I think that the turbo may also need some love, would an upgrade be worth it?

Thanks Teoman

Go ahead and do the timing belt and egr delete. Not sure about the requirement for water injection though, it's not something I've really heard of with these engines
I'd suggest pulling the intake manifold off and cleaning the egr crud from out of that and as much out of the ports of the head as you can. At that mileage its probably due for new injector lines as well. Have your valve clearances checked
A blocked fuel filter can be responsible for lack of power/acceleration so change that for new genuine one

If you go bigger injectors and turbo then you'll need to fit a unichip so it can be tuned to suit and to eliminate the boost cut, and you'd also need a larger intercooler. This can become expensive but well worthwhile if you're looking for good power gains. GTurbo red wheel, +30 injectors, Unichip and large front mount intercooler will see around 300hp at the wheels which is a lot of fun and turns it into a very different vehicle. It will pull HARD up any hill even with a big load

Thanks for the reply.

Any chance of changin just the turbo wheel (turbine)?

Where is a good place to get the unichip? And can I tune it myself? I contacted unichip, but the local dealer has not sold one in over 10 years.

Before I start with the turbo I would fully inspect the EGR and do the necessary service to it. Next is fuel pump and filter service. Once you have ruled out these basic items, next are the injectors. Last is the turbo.

HD Automotive

These guys have all the stuff you need. Can get Unichip pre-tuned to suit whatever mods you have as well, Unichip don't offer the software for tuning it yourself unfortunately, only dealers get access to it. You'll need a bigger intercooler as well, either the PDI that HD Automotive sell or Cross Country. I went with the Cross Country because I didn't want to drill my rad support and didn't want to downsize batteries. It works very well.
Also check your MAP sensor filter isn't cracked, it can cause loss of power.

Hi mate!
Just got back my rig after a 9 month reconditioning work. On top of that have installed exactly the same setup as you indicated (the red wheel GTurbo/+30% injectors/PDI IC and the Unichip with 5 maps + boost controller).
Today paid a visit to the dyno guys as to check what the specs are. Disappointment... 175 HP and 401 Nm at max. I believe I have an issue with my IP, it looks like is not able to deliver sufficient fuel. Now I'm trying to find out if the IC has some fuel flow adjustment which might've been adjusted by the previous owner.
Digging around the internet for the faintest hint but at no avail.
This weekend going out to the mountains but next week I'll pass the rig and the Toyota's manuals to a local mechanic to start checking actual status against original specs. I'm a bit frustrated after such a long pause and money spent but hope to deal with it and see something come up close to those numbers.
