I would be in for one once they're confirmed to be functional and of good quality.

LITP, I had no problem installing a 5 speed with 40 series cover in my 1981 FJ40 with no modifications other than to the transfer case shifter. A little heat was all it took to bend it to the right place to fit the factory hump cover. It's just a little shorter now. Getting the transmission out someday may pose a bit of difficulty as there's not much room in front of the crossmember tube. I installed the engine and trans as one piece.

I assume you used the same transmission crossmember you were using for the four speed? Mine is a 79 and wondering if I installed the L brackets a little lower if I could get around modifying tunnel. I have the later raised inspection cover that would help right around the shifter. On my 68 I used some fender washers on the front motor mounts to pivot the back to clear the floor when I installed a four speed. It too has very little clearance from the round torque tube. In the past I've removed the rear motor mounts and lower the back of the to pull the transmission but pulling the whole is probably easier.

Yes casting then machining and heat treatment to T6

My quote was for up to 100 with the tooling. I have just tried calling them to confirm, but ended sending an email.

Your right if re-tooling had to happen it would cost potentially $200. I personaly dont know the process or there machinery well enough if tooling can be repaired or gets a shorter life when keeping within closer tolerances.

Thanks for the concern. I do not want this to fail part way through.

Any updates on the tooling questions, or potential to install your prototype on a running cruiser?

A short update.
At least 10 days away from installing it in my cruiser. A video at the same time.
1000 parts per tooling.

Wanted to post my findings on the shaft and why i think it does not need replacing. Left shaft is the 60 series with 2 holes and right is the 40.
The black lines represent the full range of movment in the shaft.
The lines either end of this is the minimum that sits in the housing. The 60 series one is set evenly where the 40 one is only about 6mm at one end. Remember this part of is still in the same housing and all other moving parts are the same.
My opinion is the 50 series part is better for the aplication.

Neither shaft have any locator pins so it can slide into the corect position even though the hole is in a different locations. Both the holes are on the correct angle and thread for the leaver seat or wing to bolt into place.

Yes I understand this is no substitute for a working prodotype but hopfuly builds a little trust on where i am coming from.

john-
sheet metal is different as Steve said, but you can make a factory 4 sp 1979-1985 top cover for tranny hump fit. The damn tcase shifter is different and a 60 or 70 series is too far back. I don't think the top plate conversion is worth it for a 1978 or earlier truck.

j60 on left, installed this lever on right from R141 pzj75 1991 model which will move the t case lever toward the correct tunnel hole on 1979-1985 tunnel cover.

The 84 HJ47RV I took the top cover from is different than the earlier 79-82 covers I have, raised around the transmission shifter. The outline is also different. Vehicle had a H41 and was marked H41 on the VIN plaque. Haven't seen enough to be sure but thought the cover changed to fit the H55F on all model starting 10/82 (83 model). Would make sense if they changed the hump to just change them all. Believe from the cowl to the B pillar is basically the same other then RHD or LHD. Different fixed nuts for seats/seat belts but remember crawling under the troopy and seeing the reinforcement for the hand brake lever was there for both RHD and LHD. The cowl and floor were damaged beyond repair but if I had known the hump was different I would have taken plenty of measurements. At that time I had my 79 local here in town to compare.

Do you know if the T case shifter for the PZJ75 is still available or only used from another market. Yours clearly looks new. I've had people tell the shifter from the 40 was the same as the 60/70. But unless the boss on the transmission was further forward knew it had to be different. Even if the boss was in a different location the rod going to the hi/lo would have to had been longer. If your going to go to all the effort of getting the transmission shifter in the right location your going to want the T case shifter in the right spot too.:meh:

After pulling my top plate apart three times for the purpose of discovering how many 60 series parts are compatible in the 40 series 5 speed. I have finaly came to the conclusion that.
A) 2 parts are different. A wedge below the leaver and its shaft.
B) the wedge is a combination of two parts on the 60 and would need to be manufactured.
C) the holes in the shaft is in a different location and even though it all bolts on, 1st 3rd and 5th dont engage corectly. A new hole will need to be drilled and tapped or another shaft used.
D) i did figure that a custom (b) part that uses the same hole but the wedge is relocated would also work.
Also any 4 speed parts are certainly no help.

I no longer have the motivation to continue this project. I neither have the marketing skill or project managment skill to bring this to life. If anyone is interested in the cad file that cost $1500 to produce it is for sale for any resonable offer above $700.
It come with my written comercial garentee that i will never comercialy work on this project again and sell give or trade this file to anyone else again.

I'm interested in taking on this project.

So how can we do this ?

somewhere I remember on another post someone fabricated the 2 parts to make this work.....I'll have to see if I book marked it

Guys I got a unicorn top plate no internal shift fork assembly. I purchased a new H55f and was able to use all existing shift fork assembly parts minus two small parts. I searched heaven and earth and the two unique parts could not be found. Took this to my local shop and they spec'd the two needed shift fork parts and Had them machined. Call James or Ian at R&R off-road at 719 465 4594 if you have an empty 40 top plate but a new H55F.
