I noticed a small spot of gear oil on the garage floor....After crawling underneath for further inspection it looks like the rear of the front drive shaft (where it connects to the transfer case (tranny??) is leaking.

Anyone have any idea how much this seal replacement may cost? Or how banana job is it to replace myself?

I am assuming it is some sort of pinion seal and/or transmission/transfer case output seal.

Thanks

Well you're in luck, I just replaced mine about 2 weeks ago. I looks alot easier than it is. I never looked at an exploded diagram of the front housing of the t-case. I figured it was like some of the older ones - remove the driveshaft, remove 30mm nut and remove t-case flange, replace leaking seal. Well no such luck. The flange/shaft is all one piece held by a snap ring inside the front housing. You need to remove the entire front housing to remove this snap ring. And unfortunately you need to remove the whole t-case because there is not enough clearance to get the housing out. All fairly simple except the puller needed to remove the shaft - needs long arms to work right. I would say it is probably a 2-3  job. But the bright side is the part is just the one seal $15 or so.

Good Luck, ben

LexusBen, did you do the seal replacement in a shop or at home? About how many hour job is it for a shop to do this?

Sounds a little involved for a garage job with a floor jack and some jack stands.

Thanks

I did it at work and it took about 2 hrs. You could do it on the garage floor. The t-case isn't that heavy. You could pop it out on your chest, I think it only weighs about 100#. Probably take you 3-4 hours. Remember the hardest part is pressing the flange/shaft out. The puller I used had about 4-5 in long arms.
