Hey guys-

I am considering installing MAF ceramic headers along with the complete 2.5 inch exhaust system into my 62. Do any of you have experience with the MAF components, ie. installing, performance. If so, is it something I can do myself if I have no fabrication skills or do I need to find somewhere to take her??Do i have to remove the engine to get the headers on?

Thanks for any and all opinions.

Installed the header & Y-pipe into an '83 60. At that time MAF said the setup was completely smog-legal & complete, but it didn't have the air inlet pipe going into the Y-pipe. Had to remove my old one & get it welded in. Now they say it's there, but I'd check.

Asked my Midas buddies about the proper method & they said "start from the front & work back". Hard to do when all you're replacing is the front, but you'll be able to do it. Don't tighten anything (except the headers to the head) until it's all in & aligned. Again, do the final tightening from the front.

Man I've been thinking about this setup also. I have the same quistions too, it there anything else that needs to be done other than having to weld in the air inlet pipe? I have an enourmous leak coming from the mani that I need to get fixed.

ceramic headers

I was just reading that performance headers do not have any performance benefits and just increase heat output in the engine compartment. Any thoughts on this??

Do a search for Mark W thoughts on building 2f engines. A bunch of other master wizards (pinhead, fj40jim, etc) also chimed in, and there's lots of good stuff in there.

As I recall, you are right on the mark that you get more heat. Also, I think the consensus was that the best performance increases were from dealing with compression, cam, carb and exhaust all as a system...

I am supposed to get my ceramic coated headers and setup from MAF sometime this week for my 85 fj60. I am installing them next weekend, and will report back. I am also using some nology ignition wires. any how will see.

Go buy a welder from Home Depot for $250.00 and do it yourself. Then if you want you can weld heat sheilds to the top of you whole exhaust that will cut down on alot of heat. one tip is dont buy metal from home depot. Go to your local sheet metal dealer and they will sell it for 1/4 of the cost.

welders and such

Hey batman-

what kind of welder should I look for? Tig, Mig? Any tips? I have never welded anything in my life. I know my way around bmx bikes, not cars :)

yetiman, keep us updated on how your install goes! If you could post pics of the process that would be superb.

i'm still reading thorugh past threads. Very informative... this forum kicks much a$$.

Thanks.

what about the TPI ceramic headers?how do they differ from the MAF ceramic headers? anyone got insight or info? TPI makes it a poin to say that heat build-up is not a problem in their headers as heat is forced down throught the downpipes. whadya think?

Thanks.

Mig, easy to use and learn.... I didn't know how to weld before I baught this one. The one I purchased was a lincon. It workd great for what I am doing with it.
I bought a welder from home depot for $250.00

you might also want to check out harbor freight http://www.harborfreight.com

These guys have a 220v welder with or with out gas for a good price...

I have the MAF headers and they are fine. They have not melted anything under my hood, so there goes that old wives tale. I installed them when my motor was out, if I were to do it in the car I would probably remove the fender to make it very easy but it is not necessary. If I were to do it again I would probaly modify my stock exhaust manifolds since no header is smog legal in California for the 3FE. When I was installing them I had to enlarge a hole on the header closest to the firewall because the peg on the head that it was supposed to line up with didn;t until I enlarged the hole a little. Nothing too major, so if your rear header doesn't want to go on that may help. I would also replace the doughnut crush gaskets that are in-between every union you separate on the FJ-62 exhaust. And put a ruler up to the mounting surface of the head and see if it is straight. If it is not then you may develop a leak later. Have fun, and remember that penetrant is your friend.

I called Man-a-fre and they said it won't really add any power or increase MPG.... headers really help with top end breathing.... since the 2F has a tough time getting past 3,200rpm.... IMO it would be a waste of money putting on headers. Just do a nice single 2.5" exhaust.

It is a low revving tractor motor and not performance oriented. I would spend $$$ on suspension instead. It made a world of difference for my rig.
