Long time lurker thought it was about time to come clean. Lol. Have a 2011 FJC TT. Saw the post for the Rubicon and thought I would throw my hat in ring and go for it.

I note that Rubithon folks are recommending at least 34" tires, 35" or better preferred, on FJCs to do the Rubicon... I have 33"s and, hence, will be keeping my FJC TT away from that trail.

Anyone here try the Rubicon with only 33"s and a mild (2.5") lift?

Yes, did it in '08 on 255/85/16's with OME "med" springs, no problem...
 
Thanks guys been busy at work. I like work but it sure cut`s into the day. Color yes it`s army green. Tire size I did read the recommend tire size was 34 or 35. Trying to shoehorn some 315 into it

Yea I`am still challenged by the last part as well. D.D are 285/70/16 Goodyear Wranglers.
 
Kind of...from my understanding, the Toyota Trail Team had: 285/70/16's, Budbuilt skids, ARB front bumper w/Warn 8k winch and a "spacer, leveling lift" on the front, OEM sliders and very skilled drivers...:steer:

I'm pretty sure the Trail Team vehicles were using 285/75/16s (33"). BFG doesn't make a 70 (32")

It was a Revtek lift

But the drivers -- Yeah, huge difference.

Additionally, the "stock" FJC that Toyota Corporate took through in 2006 had a support staff, a couple of 80s and many high lift / jacking spots

I personally think the 33's (285/75/16) are perfectly fine, but I understand why the recommendation is 34 - 35s.

I think the most important of any mod for Rubicon is the Bud skids. I turtled at least twice on those skids, and got out of it every time. I shudder to think about what damage would have been if they weren't there.

Yep. Three trips successfully, last year broken ring gear (faulty e-locker)

285/75x16 BFG KM2's
OME heavy lift 2 1/2"
Bud Built skids
TRD rock rails
4x4 labs rear bumper

I read in a couple of places that the pro drivers used in the Trail Teams effort were key factors in the success of the FJC ... their support team as noted below I'm sure was instrumental too ...

According to the Jan/Feb (06?) issue of "Toyota Trails":

"The FJ Cruiser was brought in via transport, along with a late model Tacome and two 100 series Land Cruisers as support vehicles." .... "The 100 series rigs features 2" of OME lift and Toyota rear electric lockers. One of the 100s wore BFG 285/75 mud terrains and was equiped with an ARF front locker, while the other rode on 285/75 BFG all terrains with no front locker."

The trail has been proven doable by us mortals without the supports noted but I wouldn't even think of trying without sliders/skids, 33s and a 3" lift ...

For me the interesting thing about deciding to do something for the first time is the excitement of doing the event but all so the dread. I am in the process of gather as much information as I can as to what I need to do to the FJ. I will post up later as to what I have done so far. Thanks guys.

You have all the info needed...33's, strong skid plates (like Budbuilt), recovery equipment (front winch at least), sliders and most important of all, listen to your spotters. Driving experience can only be gained through driving, so just plan on it and go...:beer:
